Split ring strength w/ assist hooks...

I recently purchased some new 250 gram flat side style jigs that came rigged with assist hooks. The split ring connecting the jig to the solid ring is pretty wimpy so i began switching them out with stout split rings. I started thinking that since i am tying the line to the solid ring and the assist hooks are on the solid ring, then there is no need for a strong split ring since the fish is not pulling against the jig itself. What size split rings do you use, and what are your thoughts on this? Should i just put the cheap split rings that they came with back on and save the more expensive heavy duty ones for my poppers and diamond jigs? Thanks for the advice in advance!

Yes, there is a good reason for switching out to a good split ring. That reason is you will loose jigs at the boat when the fish comes up and starts to shake his head then the jig goes blub blub to the bottom of the tub. I have lost several just like that.

The next bite on a jig.
I just got some oval split rings that Pete and I were unable to pull apart last weekend. I haven't tested them in the ocean yet, but if they pass, then I will make them available. I know they are the strongest I have ever seen, but not stainless, which concerns me.

Cheapo split rings work fine. I don't see how you could ever lose a fish because of them, i guess if they where real weak you could lose a lig.

I don't know what kind of fish you target. I use Owner #8, 9 and 10 for tuna jigging.

Here you go. Best of both worlds. Inexpensive and good. But I only have a few left until my summer shipment arrives.

I only use these for attaching jigs. If I am going to attach a hook, I use the rings Kil mentioned above.

if you don't want any doubts, use a stronger one, then it will never come off. But if you use the cheap, you might have to think about it a little more. to me it would seem on how much your jigs cost and what they are worth to ya.
