The next bite on a jig.
I would say your first choice would be spinning or conventional. I went out with Di hrd Charters so I could use Steve's tackle. Catch some fish, see what I like and what I wanted.

I thought I wanted a spinning set up before I went. But for me it didn't work as well as conventional.

Looks like I might need to spend some time here also, new to this type of fishing. What are the basic pros and cons on spinning gear vs conv? TIA........

Its really just personal preference. You just want to go light, lighter, lightest...to be able to jig all day.

For what is worth, I just ordered what I would consider a starter outfit from Custom Marine. I got a torium 20 on a trevala xh rod with 80lb pe line. I got it for dropping 200-300g jigs in 200-300 ft of water.

There are a lot lighter/better outfits out there that others can chime in on. Diawa saltigas, etc. but I'm trying to start a business, so I had to get by for a few months if you know what I mean.

These are all good threads about tackle:

jigging has been a great way to put fish in the box
we are doing alot of trips of just jigging

    when selection a JIGGING SETUP
    a budget is a factor
and then a choice of spinning or conv
    AND then
a choice if you will be doing the Jerk/crank style or "east coast" style of more a yo-yo
the jerk crank is a fast paced style best done with a Short rod
the east coast style is best done with a longer rod
you can do both styles with either rod
    BUT
using the wrong rod for the different type of jigging will not as well or it wont be fun or may not be as productive
it take alot more energy when using the wrong rod
so your jigging technique may suffer, causing lack of effort and possibly lack of fish..

    for a conv, jerk/ crank,
you will have the butt under your arm pit and hand on reel handle

    other hand on fore grip
    lift with the foregrip hand
crank as the rod is being lowered
doing this in a very fast rapid motion
until you get bit or are thru the target range

for the other style 'east coast"
    a longer rod is used
the jig is dropped to the target depth
and a UP sweeping motion is used with the longer rod
moving the jig thru the strike zone
rod is lowered aqnd swept again till you get bit
you can do afew long sweeps and change depth
but keeping the jig in the target zone

target zone is best found with a good fish finder and
    PE jigging line

GREAT CUSTOM RODS AT THE BEST PRICE
Some Of The Blanks we Use.

    Spinal, Black Hole,Jigging Master,OTI, Calstar.

OK....This all makes sense, LIGHTER the BETTER, OK......but which style should I use......don't have a clue.

Does my size matter concerning different styles of Jigging? I am 6'3" and rather chubby at 310Lbs. ( My bride calls it more to love by the way ) Is a shorter or longer rod better suited to my size or does it matter?
