About 10 days ago I had my first full day fishing on my own terms (client free) in beautiful Costa Rica in about 4 months. With all this time I off I figured I had some good fish karma coming my way.
I couple ex-pat friends of mine and I left the Sierpe del Pacifico Eco-Adventure Community http://sierpedelpacifico.com at 5 a.m. planning to combine some jigging and popping around Cano Island with some off-shore action out near the continental shelf. All of our freezers were very empty and we looking to fill them up.
We had lines in at Diablo reef at about 6:30 and proceeded to get our fill of small amberjack, albacora, and a small, reddish type of jack the locals call salmonetta. We did hook into two sea-monsters that rocked us and also had some wahoo come through and part our lines. Nothing was worth photographing, but we had a good amount of meat by now so we headed off-shore hoping to chance upon the big schools of dorado that show up thick in November.
About 30 miles out we run into this
It's a big school of spinner dolphins with birds working overhead.
As we approach the school our hopes are confirmed as we see some YFT breaking and chasing flyers.
We put a couple of cedar plugs out to elicit that first bite. It doesn't take long for one of the rods to go down with a 30 lber. While one guy fights the fish the rest of us went to work with the jigs and poppers.
We didn't get to many pics of fish in hand because we were far to focused on hooking, landing, and getting back in front of the school as quickly as possible.
By 12:30 we had exceeded our fish box capacity and realized that we had some serious hours of cleaning ahead of us so we called it quits. Final tally was 31 YFT between 10 and 50 lbs. We lost one right at the boat that was probably pushing 80. All but two came on poppers and jigs. Normally I wouldn't keep so many, but given that it is a slow time for the little tourist town of Sierpe I knew that a lot of locals could use some extra protein in the fridge. Cuban cigars and cold beers on the dock rounded out the day.
The next night we enjoyed the spoils from the day before at my buddy's treehouse community http://fincabellavista.net . He's got some serious sushi skills, so we ate well...pura vida!
Did a simple beach, snorkel, fish combo day with some clients two days later. Only fished two hours, but did pretty well with some 40 lb. almacos, APs, yellow jacks, and a nice pargo cera
I also managed to take some of the best pictures of "La Carlita" ever.
We've still got 15 of 24 lots left...ocean access boat slips included...www.sierpedelpacifico.com
Tight lines - Cassidy
