Sharing Jigging and Popping with Kids!

A cool thing about my job is that I get to share one of the best fishing places (Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica) and some of the best fishing techniques in the world with people who range 0-10 on the fishing skill meter. Not everyone who buys property at our development cares about fishing. Some are here just for the wildlife, natural beauty, and solitude. With these types of clients, I focus on that stuff 98% of the time during the presentation. But for the short period of time during the ocean tour day when it is time to get dinner, they get a jigging rod put in their hand whether they like it or not. The beauty is that most of them end up catching a fish completely on their own. The basic mechanics of dropping a jig, retrieving, and reeling a fish in are pretty rudimentary and easy. Most like this experience and can say with certainty "I get why people fish now". Sharing good fishing with enthusiastic kids is pretty fun too. Teaching a kid who has only caught piddly freshwater fish how to work a big jig, pump a fish, and palm a spool is pretty cool. They get pretty jazzed! Here are some pics from a group of kids and their dads I had in this past week.

Schoolie yellowfin were everywhere. Perfect targets for kids with a 150 gram jig on a light rod.

bigger kids can use the poppers.

for some odd reason there was a decent rooster mixed in, caught him on the jig

Little rooster on the popper. Believe it or not, this fish completely inhaled and 8 inch tuna hunter. The fish didn't have a chance, so we kept it for the smoker

Dad hooked it, kids took turns cranking it in. This was a big one, 55-60 maybe.

    released in good condition

Got into some bigger tuna later one day. Had some fish over 100# sky the poppers a few times...ended up putting 3 in the 50-60 range in the boat. These fish were cruising super fast with spotted dolphins, so unfortunately we lost them after the first round.

    happy families

    gallo on a jig

a 10 year old, hooks, fights, and lands a rooster all by himself

when we land a nice sized green runner we can't help but drop it down. big almacos usually come a knocking...

silkies are the best tasting snapper around

no kidding, this big spanish mack skyed 2.5 meters out of the water on the strike.

This rooster was landed 6 miles offshore in 200 feet of water with schoolie tuna on a jig...strange!

I had another group of clients in this past Friday. First drop of the jig on the day in super dirty 50 ft water gets us this guy.

A few drops later we get this guy...check roosterfish off the list for the day. Some days they are crazy for jigs.

time for some big almacos...this was the fourth largest.

this was numero uno...slammed a big green runner 20 seconds after dropping it down.

bad photo, but shows off the overall size better. with a 56" fork length, and 38" girth, the formula that I have says 102 lbs., which sounds about right.

Good fishing to be had right now in the Osa. All trips originated from the Sierpe del Pacifico eco-adventure community Costa Rica Eco Community Real Estate - Sierpe del Pacifico
