Saltist 50H Drag re-work

I just reworked both of my Saltist 50H's and upgraded to the Carbontex drag washers (a very easy switch out using an older great photo filled instructional post on line). Went from 19-20lbs of max drag to 25-26lbs locked down. They are loaded with 100lb braid for my deep jigging. For you guys that have been using Carbontex washers, what drag setting are you consistently able to fish (tuna and AJ's) and still maintain the integrity of the drag system? These drag washers seem pretty robust, can I max it out? I had been using 17 lbs prior to my upgrade. Thanks in advance for your advice.

The carbontex washers are much better than the stock washers in your daiwa. You should be able to max out the drag all the time with very little to no deterioration of the washers. I have carbontex washers in serveral of my jigging reels and every so often i take them apartand to my surprise it is always as clean as a whistle, whereas with the stock washers, they are always covered in this black soot which is the wearing away of the washers. I would still after a days use back way off the drag to keep them from being compressed all the time.

Your problem will not be with the drag, but with the anti-reverse bearing. It will likely get destroyed at higher than 18lbs of drag with any continued use.

I went thru this on the same reel and Alantani helped me learn all about it.

Thanks for the input. I reworked the drag using Alantani's posts. What a great job he did. Made it easy. I am looking forward to the first big runs from tuna, to see how smooth these drags are.

John, can you elaborate on the anti-reverse bearing a little. Did yours break using the original Daiwa drag? (would an upgraded, smoother drag system even help avoid this?) How do avoid this other than fishing at 18lbs or less drag? and is this an inherrant problem with the Saltist? I saw where Alantani had repaired the anti reverse on a Saltist 30. But that was a couple years ago. I would assume if it was a problem, Daiwa would have stepped up and beefed up the bearing.

How do the other manufacturers deal with this?

Pipeliner,
I have done the drag upgrades in my saltigas which are essentially the same. I have done 19 minute fights on 200lb Bft with the drag locked down (28lbs on the hand scale) and no failure yet. I wouldn't be overly concerned.

When I'm making my first drop of the day, I crank my drag all the way down, then back off one click, which I'm guessing puts me in the 25lb range. Thats were it normally stays for the day.

Great info.

I'm going to run mine around 23-24lbs on the scale and will let you know how they perform. Now I just gotta find some big fish. Have an overnighter to the floating platforms in August. Hopefully the big yellow fin will be there this time.

Regards,

Tom

The reel is engineered for 22lbs of drag, so you really aren't pushing the envelope too much. Plus the new drag curve should be much smoother over the course of any fight.
