Correct me if I'm wrong here, but Saltigas already have carbon graphite drags.
Saltists do not, therefore they need to be upgraded. No upgrade needed for Saltiga.

My Saltist 40 HA levelwind already have a type of Carbon Fiber disc for the drags when I got it. They have 3 thick CF washers. The carbontex kit has 5 thinner CF washers.
I do not believe so. I believe the drags are similar. The only difference is frame and internal construction. Either way i would upgrade to the Carbontex. No questions there. They are super smooth and i pulled 24# of drag with my Saltist on that upgrade.
just to make sure, i called daiwa usa in cerritos, california, (562) 802-9589 and spoke to toby. i asked him if they had changed the drag washers in the saltist or saltiga to carbon fiber. he said no. figured i'd better ask just to make sure. you know, ambassaduer changed over to dry carbon fiber and never told a soul. just wanted to check with daiwa directly to make sure there was not change while we were not looking.
so anyway, smoothdrag.com still has a set of carbontex for the saltiga's. you use the same ones for the saltists. it is not a perfect fit, but it's close enough and works just fine.
regarding the drag settings, we still have the same old problem. the single anti-reverse roller bearing in the daiwa saltist, the daiwa saltiga, the shimano trinidad and shimano torium remains the weak link. this single anti-reverse roller bearing will start to back up and fail at drag settings in excess of 18 pounds. i generally consider a 15 pound drag setting to be the absolute maximum for this reel. i have seen them fail at drag settings as low as 12 pounds. you will know that the roller bearing is failing because the handle will nudge backwards ever so slightly when you pull at a heavy drag setting. then the ambassaduer style dog has to catch. if it misses (and under a big fish), the handle goes knuckle buster on you and you break a few fingers. i heard from the captain of the royal polaris that this happened to a lady and her trinidad. it ruined her trip.
no discussion of a problem should ever omit a discussion of possible solutions. for the shimano trinidad and torium, it might be possible to use a double stack of anti-reverse roller bearings. that's what accurate does in their boss reels. that does not appear to be possible in the daiwas. nor does the after market installation of a second dog in the daiwa 15, 20 and 30 series saltists or saltigas. in these reels, i think you'll just have to keep the drag setting low....... alan
Alan,
Thanks, you know I greatly value your opinion on these matters.
I am confused about the Saltigas because they advertise carbon drag washers in them. I even just pulled out my instruction booklet and it states carbon as well. I'm going to try Daiwa tomorrow, mainly because I also need an instruction manual on the Expedition in English if it exists, but to also inquire a little futher.
Thanks so much for your input on this. I think I'll set my drag to 18 and leave it.
I took apart my new Expedition tonight to grease the drag. Those washers looked like they were made from some kind of magnet material.
It will be a jigger. I will probably order the dogfight for my popper. Maybe for my B-day in April.
