    Rigging Question - Assist Hook

I was looking at a flat side today and realized the jig could be tied onto the leader positioning the hook on the belly side or the back side of the jig.

I was wondering if anyone had ever noticed this before?

My guess is that you would get a better hook ratio using one way over the other? I'm just not sure which.

    Hook oriented on back

    Hook oriented on belly

I have never noticed that before Looking at the majority of my jigs I have them rigged towards the belly of the jig. I guess I will rig some towards the back to see what shakes out Thanks for the food for thought .

I've never noticed that before either Anyone have any info on which works best?

My guess is it wouldn't make much difference. The hook should get sucked in to the fishes mouth pretty easily on either side. I don't really know though!

that only happens if your jigs have a top or a belly

The species we target with jigs seem to all have rather large mouths so I don't really think it matters where the hook is placed

When I use two hooks, I put one on each side. Don't know if it's helped but it's what I usually do.

    Jim,
    You need to go jigging.

    does it matter?
I'm not big into jigging but IMO, I don't think it would make a bit of difference. Unless this game has changed since I use to do it, don't a majority of the hits come on the fall? If this is still the case, the jig should be fluttering making the hook placement a non-issue, except for maybe top or bottom of the jig.

Is this how it is still done or has jigging changed?

I have noticed this and I try to tie on so the point of the hook is pointing away from the body of the jig.

It seems each assist hook is a little different depending on how they went together. I'm not sure if either side of the jig matters but exposing more of the gape of the hook should.

    Yes? No??? Just my.02
