I finally had a chance to fight a tuna with 500g JM Power Spell rod in Lobster Claw out of Cape May yesterday.
The 90 lbs bluefin was the only fish I could land out of three solid hook-ups and two other hit. The bites lasted only a few hours in the morning.
When I saw the Power Spell rod for the first time, I noticed that the rod is well balanced with superb wrapping job.
I ordered many Power Spell blanks, but I am wondering whether it is necessary to build custom rods from Power Spell blanks as they are so beautifully made and the rods from tip to butt are thoughtfully designed. I am going to recommend custom rods only those who need different length of rods and grip because of their physics and preferences
The 500g rod is not super light like Hot's Wei World, but very light considering how heavy the wall of the rod is. I jigged 6 - 7 hours non-stop, but I didn't feel any fatique. With my normal Saltiga 40, the balance of the rod and reel was almost perfect.
I could fight pretty easily even I didn't use a fighting belt and I could land the 90 lbs tuna within 7 - 8 minutes.
Backbone of the rod ? I never had the rod got bent fully for the whole fight. It would have been better test if I had had a 150 lbs range tuna which are frequent in the area. However I feel the rod can handle any tuna even over 200 lbs. It is like a broom stick with thinner diameter. As the rod is so powerful, I am thinking we can enjoy more with 300g or 400g Power Spell rods for average tuna in 50 - 100 lbs range.
When tuna charged under the boat, I had a total control of the rod as the rod has so much backbone.
So far, so good, but you can not judge a rod with only one experience. I am going to test the rod with much bigger tuna in/around Cape Cod Bay soon.
