    Reel advice

Getting a Trevala jigging rod. The 6'H 65-200lb one. I've been having a hard time selecting a reel. I'm a shimano fan and love my torium 30. I was thinking about a torium 20 for this rod. But the 6.2 gear ratio has me concerned. I like the looks of the dawia saltist and Saltigas but have never had one. I like the lower gear ratios on them. My head keeps telling to go with a 4.9 or 5.0 gear ratio instead of the 6.2 of the toriums. (wish I could swing a trinidad)

Normally I wouldn't have the issue has I would have already bought the torium 20, but seeing the size of the fish in ya'lls pics makes me think I need torque instead of speed!

So what says the board. Which reel would be best for the 6' 65-200lb trevala?

Let me suggest an OTI jigging rod, more backbone for little more money.

Go to 360 tuna.com and you can see them there, and TJ runs that forum and owns OTI.

craig it all depends on what u wanna catch and where. all of those groupers to over 50 lb i have caught have been on my torium and trevalla. neither are dead yet. fishing here is a lot different than what the fellas south of us deal with - we dont need as much drag imho. that being said i am picking up a saragosa 18k for ajs and it will also work fine for grouper and tuna and hold a plenty o line for all. im looking at the oti rod too, just to try something different. im not gonna say that i havent enjoyed my trevalla, but id like to compare it to some other stuff. u will hear a lot about how much better the other rods are - and im sure they are, but when u can spend a hundo and break it, bring it back and get a new one that isnt so bad. its a shame some of the other shimano products are not avaialble here, but are overseas. if it is your first jigging rod, u will be pleasantly suprised either way. my best piece of advice is to cut up all of your credit cards, give the wife all of your checks etc. ..this shiz is addictive. hehe good luck in the purchase.

One vote for Saltiga here. I don't know anyone that has one and regrets the purchase at all. None are indestructable, but I hear few overall complaints about them.

    I love mine.

Thanks for all the info guys. Lots of great info. If I had to say right now I would lean toward the Daiwa's. Keep the info coming, I love soaking it up as I haven't done any "real" jigging.

I've got that rod in the F Series and I am NOT happy with it. It's already been busted once and I don't think it is good for much more than 20 lb class blue fish. I'll hook it into a big AJ when the time comes but I don't see it working out too well for the rod. It started life with a Torsa on it but now has a Saltist on it and is used with 200 gram jigs for sea bass and such.

I don't like the 6:1 ratio reels, esspecially for bigger lures and bigger fish.

I've got the Torium and Saltist reel. They are almost identical on the inside except the Shimano screws down their antireverse dog where Daiwa lets theirs ride on a pin. The left side bearing is clipped in on the Shimano and on the Daiwa it just sits in it's hole. The Daiwa has an antibacklash control, where the Shimano doesn't. I removed it since it was just extra junk inside the reel I didn't need.

I've put carbontex drags on both reels. The Daiwa will pull 26-28 lbs of drag, the Shimano gets over 35 lbs. I'm not sure why there is such a big difference. Either way if you fish with 18 lbs or more, both these reels are going to have antireverse issues. First you'll blow out the antireverse bearing and next you'll break the antireverse dog in it. I don't use that much drag unless I am grouper or golden fishing. It's become almost like a normal maintenance item as far as swapping out the antireverse bearings, I just keep one or two around.
