Popper Modification - Flying fish

There are a lot guys on the Pensacola Board playing with the idea of modifying their poppers to be more like flying fish. They are drilling them out and glueing in pieces of very heavy mono to get wings.

I really like what I'm seeing and thought I would share. If anyone sees this and tries it, I would really love to get some feedback on this.

Cheerio.

This is from board member redweiser.

the issue I see with it is that it'll create more resistance in the water and make it harder to pop. interesting idea though.

sometimes i'll keep my rod tip very high and crank really fast trying to get the popper to skip like a flyer does. works pretty well.

I never really know with this stuff until I try it. I have thrown many experiments in the trash, before ever putting them in water.

There was a mention about possibly fouling up when casting.

I hope someone gives this a try.

Yeah. I think they mentioned 300lb. I have some 400lb rigger line that I thought I might try.

Here are a few others they made from mirrolures.

I think it will reduce casting distance a lot in the wind. It is an interesting idea though. Though I'd think it would be better to use something that would have less resistance in the water, perhaps something from a fly fishing store.

Cool idea, I agree that maybe some feathers or something with less resistance would be much better and also reduce wind resistance for casting.

the problem with a fly/feather on a o-ring on the side instead of the stiff heavy mono, is that once reeled in, the feather/fly will just be flush on the side of the lure.

i like the heavy mono, cool idea.

ive never seen so many nearshore flyers this year, seems like right outa the inlet and up they go. so ive been thinking too on something that looks like them.
