    Popper leader connection/length

    Hey guys,
I've spent the morning sucking down coffee reading past connection threads but I still can't make up my mind. This is for casting poppers to yellowfin. I'm going to use an 80lb fluoro leader connected to 65lb tuf line xp on a stella 10000fa. I am either going with the PR knot or a wind on leader connected loop to loop. How long of a leader are you using whether it is a wind on or a knot connection? How do each of those setups cast? I think I probably want to lean towards the connection/leader length that allows for the longest casting distance.
    Thanks,
    Al

the pr will cast fine due to the way it is "tapered" . i have used that knot with a conv. reel to cast poppers and it does not hang up in the eyes.

I will be following up my intro to jigging with an intro to casting next week. Pr Knots are a great connection when done right. The leader length should be enough to wrap around the spool several times and enough to come out about 2 feet off rod tip to leader so about 12'.

Awesome, thank you. Exactly what I was looking for

I've seen some people say the PR holds fine on fluoro, what is your experience with it?

IMHO you do not need fluro when casting poppers, the leader get pulled through the top not underneath so it adds no value. Yellowfins when feeding do not look at leader they are detonating on baitfish above so they see shapes and splash in my opinion

In panama we were using 150-200 pound shock leader and never had any issues getting bit. This one was caught with 150 pound shock leader no fluro along with about 20 others in Panama

    Gman,
One thing I am worried about is pulling the shibukis under the water. I do tend to agree about the tunas when they are blowing up, but I would hate to throw something in to one of those boils and wonder why I didn't get the bite, even if it wasn't the leader that was the problem.

Believe me it has happened more than I care to say where there are fish but they arent feeding. I would agree on sub surface lures they MAY see it but it depends on how they are behaving. Rolling or pushing water or feeding. When they are feeding they will eat anything

Here is my honest opinion, and it is with anything - knots, rods, reels, leader. Confidence rules and you should fish with whatever makes you confident

In Panama no one used Fluro and shibukis got bit like crazy. Off Cape Cod we fish shibukis and we dont use fluro either and get bit like crazy BUT...

if you feel like fluro gives you an advantage you should use it just use something soft like blackwater or yozuri pink

Some shibuki (souls barbarus, same thing just heavier) fish with 170 pound shock leader

I think I may give it a shot with the mono, if not it will be yozuri pink. The only tuna I've caught on poppers were with an 18" yozuri pink leader, but as visible as the braid was 18" away I can't imagine mono would turn them off. I do agree that most of the tuna we throw a popper at are ravenous and the popper gets hammered within a few seconds.
Thanks a lot for the info
