Very nice Mitch! Where were you fishing out of?

Thanks! We were about 45 miles out of New River Inlet over some bait that we marked over a random rock we found. It was definately a surprise to find him in 120ft of water so far from the stream.

What kind and size jigs are you using to catch those blackfin?
That one was actually caught on a Smith CB Masamuna (sp?) in 155g. It was an all silver one. That was the hot jig for the day though. I hadn't caught a single fish on it before so I wouldn't put too much stock in the type of jig.

I was wondering because I've not had much luck with blackfin on any sort of lures or jigs. Only bucktail jigs or rubber squids.
I wish I could help you out with that. I am by no means an expert on tuna jigging. The bluefins out of hatteras seemed to like flatsides better, and also hit on the fall most of the time. This blackfin also hit after I dropped to the depth and yo-yo'd it twice at a certain depth. Wish I could help more...that would mean I would be catching more tuna on the jig

im very proud of this one guys, i know its no monster like you guys catch but it was the first fish i EVER caught on my vertical jig setup!!! So its a big deal for me!
Shimano Trevala Med. 6'6" w/ Shimano Stradic 8000, 60lb Spiderwire, 80lb Seagar Flouro, 270g Shimano Butterfly Jig.
Cant wait to catch more!!!

Nice fish! That first one is always special...its what leads to the addiction!
Mitch
I still remember my first fish on a jig. Good fun.
Ive caught blackfins on everything from really small jigs like 85g butterflies to skinny and long jigs like smith side thrusters.
You normally will mark them high in the water column from 100' and up so normally you can hook up close to boat on a slow rythmic motion. Shiny is key IMHO silvers, pinks and blues
