Penn Torque spinning reel

What's the 411 on this interesting looking reel?

Jigging friendly?

Boat: Anything with an engine.
Home Port: Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras
Best Catch: 220 pound Blue Marlin on HAND LINE.
I like the look of them, but only time will tell how good they are. I highly doubt one would ever be able to replace my Stella 20K though.

i do not think the reel is really trying to compete with stellas, with the way its sealed, its more trying to push into the surf casting, and try and compete with the van staal/Zb's.

Its a Penn, says it all. Sorry for the PEnn fans but I don't trust them at all. Also the gear ratio is 5.1:1 Thats too high for jigging spinning reel. It'll kill you by the end of the day.

It may make a great surf reel. Time will tell.

Pretty much what I expected. Penn just hasn't embraced the jigging style of fishing yet, in every area including rods, reels and my beloved jigs.

There are a lot of things you can look past in a reel, but weight is not one of them. Thanks for the update sami. I hope you all did well at the show.

neither a popping reel,
so does it serve the surf caster?
if it does then there is nothing to argue about.

It's funny because all the surf guy's say it's not a surf reel it's a jigging reel. I think penn is trying to fit one reel into both markets but they should just make two different reels.

It better be an awsome reel for people to get past the looks and the fact it's made buy penn if they want to sell any.

i agree. i had similar thoughts. mainly that it doesnt have enough bearings so isnt very smooth, and that its just not very 'finished'...i didn't like the powder coat finish it seems to have. i'm not sure whether it has a dual stack of drag washers or single, i took the spool off but couldnt tell. the marketing doesn't mention this either as far as i've seen.

perhaps it being sealed and available in bailless will appeal to surf guys, but its definitely no stella or saltiga.

time will tell but im not trading a stella just yet
