    Penn 16 VSX?

Got a question for anyone who wants to give thier thoughts. I was just wondering what some of you think as far as the Penn 16VSX goes as far as being a possible canidate for a tuna jigging reel? ( lever drag wise ) I know that Accurate , Alutecnos , Everol & John Baker reels are used , But I don't recall ever hearing about the 16VSX. Any thoughts out there ? likes , dislikes , This little monster holds over 500 yrds of 80lb Braid & is suppose to have the drag capability to handle 80lb Braid. Lets hear it !

people use them to jig with all the time.

something to consider in a JIGGING reel,
    the weight.

if you are going to jig for most of the day, a light reel would be prefered, look at reels weighing 26-30oz MAX.

you can really jig with any reel or any rod.
it just may not be the best setup.

but as poeple get more serious about their equiptment.
    and spend more time jigging.
they go to the lightest setups that can get the job done.

Thanks for the reply Paul . As you know I am really wanting to try out some jigging I can see were the lighter gear would be more friendly to the angler !

its nice to have a the specialized equiptment, newest and greatest.
but when you are starting, you can try jigging with almost anything.

getting the Jig in the strike zone is important. especially if the fish are suspended in the water.

On my first and only overnighter, one of the guys got out his 16vsx and started jigging like 20 min before we pulled up lines. He got a small yellowfin that had to go back swimming cuz it was too small. Only YF we saw all night was that one. He was only jigging for maybe 5 min or so before he got the hit.

yeah they are real popular, alot of guys use them with a "double duty" rods that will be good for jigging and other apps like trolling or chunking..
alot of guys dont want to have 1K outfits laying around they only use a few times

    1K outfit !

Darn Paul , I'll be happy just to have my jigging rod built for my Saltist 40!(almost got the $$ saved up) It's nice to have good quality tackle , but my God it doesn't feel good to the wallet with today's economics hitting home for alot of us. Anyway it's good to know about different Reel's & Rods for future posibilities!

The reel is OK for jigging tuna. The reason some serious tuna jig fishermen don't use the reel is the weight as there are many other excellent tuna jigging reels which can do the job with much lighter weight.

Not many guys can jig a 41 oz reel for long as sometimes you jig 10 - 12 hours nonstop. However you can use them for a while when tuna show up on the screen.

IMHO the reel is wayyy too heavy to jig with. We use our 16VSX's to deep drop for Grouper and AJ's and occasionally troll with them and chunk with them they are awesome reels for those applications. However jigging is another story....find something high speed and light!!
