You might be able to save some time by purchasing a fly tying tool. If there are any old school fly tyers like me out there, you will recognize that the weaving portion is essentially a hand whip that we used to do on flys before the advent on a whipping tool. You might be able to use a fly tying whipping tool to knock that weaving part off in a couple of seconds. They are cheap and pretty easy to learn how to use. From my experience though, just about every double strand knot is stronger than any single strand knot. Just my opinion
