Anybody know how to catch them? I am going to try deep dropping with bait and using my electric reel to assist a jig to the depths as well. Anyone got any good tips on catching them with bait?

how about where to find em and how to attract them. Any suggestions?
i imagine your also going to be fishing for the other 6 bottom species that they catch in hawaii. here is a link to how guys on the island do it http://www.hawaiibottomfish.info/pages/4_fishing.html
and here is a yahoo search on "palu bag bottom fishing"
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=...ie8&fr2=sb-bot
basically they deep drop and have a retrievable bag full of chum aka "palu" that brings the fish in to your baits. i believe the preffered bait to use is squid and octopus because they are fairly hard to get off the hook. i dont bottomfish in hawaii i chase the pelagic fish, but i would think the techniques used in other bottom fisheries would work for you.
The 150 fathoms are easy!!!! Its the 700g jig thats a killer
Two weeks ago I dropped a 700g on the edge of a big drop that goes from 500ft to 1850ft ( we were in 500 and marking like crazy). The current must have pushed the jig off the edge, because I went all the way to the knot on my saltiga 40 and never touched.
I only tried that once. But in two days, I will have my revenge.
I have an electric reel for anything over 500 feet. that is when I switch to bait with a deep drop light and a 5# sinker. I tried it this past weekend and only got 2 small snappers.
Keep us posted on your progress Eric
Don't know if this is late or anything but here's what I got...
First off here's the basic fish you'll be targeting deep bottom.
-Yellowtail kalikali
-Gindai/Blueline Gindai
-Opakapaka
-Onaga
-Ehu
-Silvermouth
-Greater Amberjack
-Black Jack
-Jobfish
Here's the spots that I know of: (Mostly down south)
down towards Merizo area around Cocos Island.
600-700 Ft. - Gindai, Yellowtail Kalikali
(according to some sources they used to be caught at around 500 ft. but for some reason they moved further out and majority are caught deeper now.)
800-1000ft. - Ehu, Onaga
NOTE: Just something to base yourself on I guess.
Oh yeah and another thing the east side of Guam, I've heard has some pretty awesome fishing (deep bottom). The only thing is, if you're on a small craft and the winds blowing (wind comes from the east most the year)..it'll be dangerous for you to go out there.
I've heard of some good areas outside Malojloj for Opakapaka. (Haven't had the chance to try that side yet.)
also, if you haven't seen this online yet, here's a link that'll show you how those fish look if you don't right now.
