This technique has been used for cod for long time and it is deadly sometimes.
I experimented this technique for offshore seabass for several years and I found it is very effective for seabass too.
The technique is very simple. You drop your jig to the bottom ans crank at normal or slower speed ( don't crank fast) upto 15 turns and drop to the bottom if you don't get hit. Repeat it until you get bites.
Sometimes you get bites as soon as you crank and sometimes they hit after you crank 10 - 15 turns.
Then you feel any weight, don't jerk your rod and continue cranking. When you feel the full weight, then crank very fast. Then they are hooked solidly.
On 02-02-09 trip, most seabass were off the bottom and majority of seabass were caught by using this squidding technique.
Squidding techique is deadly, but it does not work all the time.
When you start jigging, try to find out their biting moond on a particular day. Sometimes they prefer jigs moving off the bottom and sometimes they prefer squidding. If you figure out their biting mood and you can adjust your jigging style accordingly, your catch will increase dramatically.
Putting a piece of squid strip or Burkerly Gulp on hooks also increase your catches too.
