What's the difference? I always (maybe mistakenly) thought they were pretty much the same reel, just one an American release and one non US release. Now I am seeing pics of Oceas with what look to be thumb bars? Some one please educate me here.

one has a lock to stick the spool (jigger) when u get hung from my understanding. heard its hard to get the jiggers serviced here. other than that i dont know of any differences.
the OJ has 2 more ball bearings and the spool lock feature.
here is the 1500NR, 5:1 gear , 2000P 5:1 gear, shallow spool, and the 4000P, 4:1 gear ratio.

There are several differences.
1. The OJ doesn't come with a thumb bar, that is a thumbrest.
2. The 1500 & 2000 size has an auto engage system, so when you turn the handle the reel is engaged. This prevents you from having to flick teh freespool switch back and forth....it also causes teh reel to lok up on a cast is teh handle turns, that NEVER happens with my 1500, but teh 2000 NArrow I had was terrible, probably because of the larger handle.
3. The OJ has slower gear ratio, in teh 1500 & 2000 size 5:1's are designated by a P and they are grey.
4. The Lock Switch - very useful for bottom fishing, I've used my OJ for 5 seasons Blackfishing and routinely break out using 65# braid & 50# Mono. NEver a problem, nothing bends inside the reel. The Trini has a ridiculous clicker system on it.
I'm glad to see so many people re finally using the OJ's now, it's tough being the crash test dummy but well worth it since you know everyone else followed your lead.
Billy, I hate to see some jig fishermen give up Ocea Jigger 1500P/2000P becaue of auto engage system and switch to Saltiga 15/20.
You lose too many expensive jigs as the reel automatically locks on sometimes while casting.
Guy don't know casting or who don't need casting, the Ocea Jigger reels might be good.
Kil, I'm not reel fixer upper, but I have taken apart my OJ's several times. You wouldl think that with all the wannabe internet tackle ho's, someone else would have tried to disengage the auto engage by leaving out that piece when reassembling ther reel after putting in new drag washers.
So why would you buy a OJ over a Trinidad? I hear a lot of good things about the OJ's on this board, but few positive things about the Trinidad. Seems like the Trinidad would be a lot easier to service if you ran into trouble. Are the OJ's cheaper? Please educate the ignorant?
Thanks.
For bottomfishing, which is wha tI do - there is flat out not a better reel than the OJ. Teh Spool Lock feature is what puts it above the rest. The 5:1 gears make it much easier to crank fish in, that marketting BS that 6:1 is easy to crank up fish is hogwash. What is true, is that the 6:1's are easier to crank up than OTHER 6:1's, like the Penn GS and Diawa black & golds.
The only issue I've had with mine is the bearings under the handle knob fell apart, and I had to buy a new handle form Japan for $50. When I was buying the OJ's direct form Japan, the exchange rate was very favorable, I paid $280, $295, and $310. They cost quite a bit more than that now sinc ethe rate is considerably higher. And they no longer make the regular 1500P, you are stuck getting the NArrow version which imo suck because they are tall and throw the set up out of balance
