I just heard about this.
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories...0113_mpas.html
why is this such A bad thing?rec and comm boats alike must abide by those rules and if they are indeed breeding grounds for those types of fish than why is it so wrong? Please elaborate on your position. It doesnt pertain to me and my area but was just curious.![]()
Maybe I should have been clearer...I don't see it as so much of a BAD thing..I am in support of conservation and preservation...but maybe just the beginning of something much bigger...possibly eventually a closer to ALL fishing in deep water.
Kind of like the beach closure in Hatteras this past year.

they already said they may create more mpa's closer in. our waters have very healthy grouper numbers. i caught more big gags this year than in the last 10yrs. it was not uncommon for a citation, #20lbs, on every trip. the snowy wreck is 72 miles offshore, not many folks are gonna run that far for a limit of 1 per person, its convienient distraction if your fishing the stream and its slow. I have no problem w/that closure, what i do have a problem w/is when they decide they need more areas when our fishing stocks are fine. here is a link of a heated discussions

capn joe hifco and dave have been fishing here forever, joe has commercial fished here many years and has a great amount of knowledge.
anyway, that area is where the giant aj's are that charters are cashing in on, thats gonna suck for them. lots of pros and cons........im totally for preserving the resource but lets not get to tree huggy here. invalid data should not be used to appease the environmentalist. read the thread above........
SeaSea,What's up dude,I agree with you 100%.But something to think about is when we go there to jig big A.J.'s we are jigging. We are not bottomfishing.Nothing in the reg's about jigging.Granted you cannot keep Snowy from this area but they cannot stop jig as the rule's are written.
I went to a meeting a few year's ago at Blockade Runner when they first entertained this Idea and it was shot down.Everybody was upset about it!!I hope it does not spread to other area's.This area they shut down is practically unfished and there is not much left to the Snowy Wreck.
I guess they have to do something.
This post is just my opinion and I might be wrong but I feel it is useless.
As responsible conservative stewards of the sea we should always fight any complete closures and denial of access to recreational fishing as opposed to sound scientific management per local ecosystem when possible.
Somebody needs to post up the four corners so everyone can put them into their Gps's.
Thanks for the info Joey.
I put it in my machine. It does close off a few good dropps where we caught big gags. If the numbers are correct it is a much smaller box than originally proposed.
Also, reading the link Joey put up, they stated "100-300 meters". Again if my numbers are correct some of the affected area is less than 180' deep?
BTW, Not many jiggers target amberjacks in that box anymore since they found one of my "other" spots.
