    New trevalas

I got good news and bad news. The good news is that there is obviously a new and improved trevala in the works. The bad news is that I talked to our shimano rep at the sale last weekend and he said it will be at leas may before we see them. Oh well! Hopefully they are worth the wait.

they put a different section of blank in the top. making it stronger, and they are using some nice guides..this rod SEEMS to be geared toward being able to (really) catch bigger fish,, we will see

Thanks Paul. Still in the market, just getting "other things" handled for now. I'll give you a call when I get closer.

    Thanks

The old ones suck!!! They bend to much in the mid section. The first time I used mine the mid section bent so much that the braid cut into the grip of the rod. That was on a 35 pound longfin.

    Hi Whitey,

Not really a blank problem, more a build issue and I think Shimano are trying to give the US a jap style rod at a low price. True Jap style jig rods are designed around a parabolic curve that bends right back and through the foregrip under load. It is more noticable on an overhead rod as the line has to try and follow the curve with minimal runners and what you find that the line finds flat spots and rests against the blank and the even the foregrip, this is not a problem on a spinning outfit.

The reason for the parabolic bend is to be able to take the full load of the jig weight through the rod, thus giving it a cushioning affect and actually making it easier to work the jig with less effort, especially with heavy jigs. It also allows the angler to put heaps of pressure on a fish and utilising this curve actually puts less strain on the angler due to the lower centre of gravity in the rods lock up point, fast taper rods will pull down hard on the angler under heavy load and allow the fish more leverage.

I'm sure if ChrisW reads this he will be able to add more to this as he has a lot of experience with the Jap style rods.

    Cheers,

    Ian

Not sure that they suck. Handled some decent fish on them last year, seemed to have enough strength. Had problems with the top guide though -- 2 got separated. Not a huge deal, but I suppose they will use stronger components on the new ones.

That will be a good thing Paul! That's why I didn't like the rod to begin with, it was to soft at the tip. I think it needs a little more backbone at the tip!
