new jigger
I have selected 2 oz rigged jigs. My question swivel or not. I will be fishing in about 50 feet of water if this is a consideration. One option would be cross lock snap swivels. This would make the changing if jiggs a lot faster for me. If this new idea jigging is as good as I have heard, I plan on making my own down the road. Thanks very much for your time, any suggestion's would be more the welcomed. |

Welcome to the site. I have no personal experience with the reel, but I'm sure it will be fine for now. The trevalas in my mind are all over rated compared to most other jigging rods. So remember that when fishing.
As for the snap swivel, I do not like them at all. I've seen too many fish and lures lost cause of them. I would highly recommend a split ring. It doesn;t have to be an owner ring either. ANy heavy duty ring will work. The stress is on the line and solid ring, not the split ring. It just needs to hold on the jig. Bruiser fish like AJs will tweak open the split ring once in awhile so that is why I like to Owner or Spro splits. This may not be as fast of a method to change jigs, but with practice you can change a jig with split rings mighty fast. Use either side cutters or split ring pliers. Since you seem to have decent gear to start I would keep putting money into more jigs and terminal tackle for now. I you get addicted then up the gear later. You never can have enough jigs. I carry about a 30-40lb jig bag and still don't have enough on the boat. Keep lots of lengths, shape, colors, you name it. As for using a swivel, I like using them. Especially with jigs that tend to spin once in awhile, like a drift tune. Tie to a 300+lb swivel, put assist hook on bottom, and split ring on bottom. Feel free to ask any questions and check out Gman intro to jigging for guidence. |

All I can say is you poor fella. Welcome to the forum and the addiction. I have 2 Trevallas and they are extremely over rated. I also know nothing at all about the reel. I prefer to use a solid ring or swivel and tie direct to the leader, swivel snaps have let me down on a number of occasions.

Since I got back into boating I gave up my golf game. But you know my game is better the less I play. I thank you both and I hope with success this is indeed addicting. Anyway I will rid myself of the cut bait mess. Thanks again and indeed I will be back.

Well it's 3 out of 3 on the trevala rod. You know I did research them a bit. One guy said it broke in two the first time out. Then there were some who said they are still going strong. I wanted to see these rods before I purchased one.
My choice was star, bass pro,or shimano. The supply was low and for the money 100.00 or so this will be my first rod. I will be very disappointed if it breaks the first time out, but happy to have the success of jigging. Thanks |

If you don't wanna get a custom setup just yet, try the okuma cedros speed jig rod. I have a few of them in different classes and they are great rods that are well priced and they are made with really good components. At around 100 bucks, you can't beat it. Better than the shimano IMHO.

The Diawa rods are good budget rods in my opinion. I have used them a lot and they perform well. I tried to break one on a sea monster one day and couldn't.
However, the shimano rods will be plenty good for what you are doing as well. They should also be easy to resell if you like jigging and want to move up later on. For that matter, you may be able to find a used one. I know you are mostly dropping light jigs. What kind and size fish are you targeting?

I just want to follow up on my post on jigging. Again being new to gigging I want to add that most of my fishing will be in the 40 to 50 ft range. I have had success over bottom with cut bait. Most of your posts are in the 100 and beyond range. I have read every post pertaining to this. My question is what success is their in the range which I will be fishing. I know I will not be using a 10 to 20 foot leader. Probably 3 to 4 which I normally use in this range. There for the knots recommended will not be used. I want to see and test out the jigging gear. I am intrigued by it. I know I have not the best gear,it's not a stella with one of those high priced rods. I am just into it for the excitement. So back to my range any feedback? Thanks as always for your attention.
