Need more drag out of my Boss
I can get about 20ish pounds on strike and maybe 25 pounds at full, but it feels like the lever is going to bust pushing it forward, and the handle starts to get hard to turn at higher drag settings. Ideally I want to get about 30pounds on strike, and be able to do that with out the handle being hard to turn or lever feeling like its binding. I imagine there are spool shaft spacer washers that can be modified (there is on most lever drags), but before I tear it down, I wanted to check with yall. |

Dude by the name of Alan Tani would be a good person to ask. I think he's on here too, look in the reel repair section.

like glenn, i dont mess with the insides of reels.
i sent reels to tunatoys and he upgraded my trinidad and ocea with bearings, cals plate and drags and theyre performing better at high drag settings. maybe give him a shout (standuptuna@msn.com) alan tani is awesome as well just giving another option. |

its gonna be hard to get that much drag out of an 870.
i used an upraded everol 12/20 in panama that could get 40lbs of drag. its more along the lines of a 665 as far as size though. |

Is there any reel of this size capable of a true 30# drag? If so, I want to get one. I agree 20-25# is not enough for grouper.

TRQ100LD
The Penn "lever drag" Torque series smallest model, the little TRQ100LD gets an honest 27 pounds at strike and in the mid-high 30's at full straight out of the box.
The much larger TRQ300LD gets 32 pounds at strike and just over 40 pounds at full. Both have absolutely zero "side load" due to the "disconnecting drag stack". Granted, slightly heavier than others of equivalent line capacity, but all other performance issues are more than covered by these high-speed tanks. Disclaimer- affiliated Penn Pro Staffer |
