    NC Jigging Live Line 11-29-2009

Got a 1 day window on Sunday and Sami, Paul and Igor came down from NY for a little NC jig fix. Left early and had lines in by 7:15. Had some action early but no large AJs may have moved south for a couple months. Also close to the full moon didn't help. Finally, in the middle of the day we had good action. Sami landed a nice 42 lb Wahoo on the jig. She made the Stella drag sing. I did get a chance to make a few drops and caught a few AJs and a 16 lb Hog Fish on the jig. Not a bad day for late November.

Nice catch jig Captain Mike if you don't mind me asking, how do you go about targeting large AJ's and wahoo, as well as tuna on a jig. My question how do you locate these pelagics so you can jig them?

    Calebw,

Out of MHC were you fish there's quite a few place's inshore of the break that will hold larger AJ'S all winter, Wreck's, live bottom ect.... If you jump over to the East Side around the Atlas they be plenty of action over there as well, AJ'S ,Wahoo, Big Kings..As far as fishing the break look for anything holding bait, pretty much the same area's that you work trolling around the Rock, the N.E Coner has plenty of good areas to work..Remember, working the jig through the water colume works best if your marking fish at a curtain depth or pods of bait, also light surface irons like Tady's work real well for squidding across the surface when your working grass paddy's. Don't forget to work the wrecks on the break, they'll hold plenty of fish all year..

    Hi Capt Mike,
as always great to fish onboard your Contender, this is my second year targeting AJ in NC and i had over 10 trip with you, you never failed to show us your professionalism as well as your hospitality,
the fishing was a bit slow according to what we experience in North Carolina but never mind we will be back.
i had the Wahoo as sashimi and it tasted great, the wife hammered the rest of it before i came home
as for the Hog nose i just cooked it for myself and my son and it tasted out of this world, thank you.
    kind regards
    sami

That hog-nose or whatever you call it is absolutely hilarious looking...I honestly started laughing while mumbling WTF when I first saw that first picture of it.

If fish could laugh...I bet the hog-nose would be the butt of all their jokes.

Laughter aside..I'm curious about this fish. What family of species does it belong too? How big do they get? Are they common? Are they caught on jigs often? Fighting charachteristics? Sounds like they taste good too?

the Hog Nose comes from the snapper family,
Capt Mike nailed 4 fish while jigging in the past 2 years 3 of those belong to different customer, most fish is been caught in less then 200 feet, it happen that the one he caught is the biggest so far, he mention to us that he normaly spot them in large number in Florida, as for taste they are

is actually in the wrasse family. A large size fish in NC waters is in the 20 lb+ range. they are very common here in nc in waters 90'+ but they are not commonly caught by fisherman due to their diet. They dont like typical "bait" as they prefer crabs, sea urchins, worms and shellfish. You will see them diving in that depth of water quite often, they are a very curious fish.
I have never caught one on a jig but friends have and a few folks have some techniques to get them to bite a hook more often. They fight very hard. As for eating, one of the best things the sea has to offer!
