Dom, wind-on leader is the way to go. No doubt about it.
However there are two issues using wind-on leaders.
One is you lose casting distance substantially when using wind-on leaders for casting.
the other issue is we use solid color coded PE lines for jigging and Mid Knot or PR knot doesn't give any problem if made properly. You can use bimini twist to make a loop, but I had confidence in Mid Knot or PR knot as much as in bimini twist.

    Hi Kil,

I did notice a slight fall off in distance, but to me it far outweighed the other drawbacks I see with tying knots for these large tuna when popping.

With jigging, I have seen no issues with any of the knots my guys tie.... however, I had no problem using the windons with the color coded lines either using a bimini or double surgeons to create the loop. You know that I am pretty basic in my approach to fishing, the KISS rule reigns supreme with my knots and gear, so I am biased in that I hesitate to try unfamiliar, new things when I have tested and true practices that have worked for me in the past. Besides, my swollen fingers have trouble with those little bobbins.

    leeroy,
I like the mid knot for many reasons that folks have already said, but in addition the thing that I like about it is that you have instant feedback on whether you tied it correctly or not- if it slips as you tighten it you did it wrong, if it doesn't slip then it won't fail so long as you serve the end of it correctly. I learned the knot last year and used it to fight sailfish, jacks, bluefin, blackfin, and yellowfin and found it to be an excellent knot. Tying on a boat when a bite is hot is definitely difficult as I rushed it a couple of times and definitely didn't like the results- I never lost a fish, but I lost confidence a bit.

This year I'll be using the PR knot as it basically takes the mid knot to the next level. So far I've found it to be a really strong connection, and relatively easy to tie. When you get the hang of it it's actually easy to tie on a boat.

There is by no means a perfect knot or connection that works for everyone- it's all personal preference and basically comes down to the one that works best for you and that you have the most confidence in.

Sometimes you don't have to cast far to get bites. I observed 60 - 70 yard casting was good enough for bluefin in Cape Cod Bay mostly. But there are times you have advantage to cast farther. Some experiment how short you can insert mono into hollow braided lines without failures.

I like KISS too, that is why I prefer Mid Knot. It is very easy to make the knot even on a rollong boat and you don't require anything to make it.

My only complaint about a lot of knots over windons is they sound clunky through the guides.
Which one do you use Sea Draggin? I use this one... http://www.netknots.com/html/slim_beauty_knot.html

    Your officially my new hero

    Van,
I was able to consistently get 50lbs only using a single overhand knot. Also, I used a bimini for my double line in my braid.

So in your testing the figure 8 made it weaker?

The next bite on a jig.
Not weaker, but not stronger. And the single overhand was much more streamlined.

I haven't tie one since last year though, because I have exclusively used windon's this year.

What wind-ons are you using, or are you making your own?
