I drove 600 miles from NJ to NC 11 times this year mainly for grouper. There is absolutely no reason they close red grouper fishery in NC as they are plentiful and there are not much fishing pressure. But what can you do ? They close recreational cod fishing from Nov 1 to April north of Cape Cod for no reasonable reason as recreational fishing pressure in winter is minimal. But what can you do ?
However, I can not stop fishing because of stupid regulations.
January is still prime time for tuna in Gulf of Mexico.
And Jan to March is prime time for trophy tog in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
Besides, we go offshore seabass and tilefish jigging once a week in winter out of Cape May, NJ.
Good thing is AJ fishery in NC is intact as AJ in NC are full of worms and nobody wants to eat AJ when they see those worms.

JerseyBrian and I planned to go up north for cod fishing in Rhode Island today, but the cod party boat didn't sail.
Instead we spent four hours at my shop talking about tackles and jigging techniques while watching NZ jigging video until mid night. Nick and Brian will visit again at my shop on Sat morning and we plan to go to China town in Manhattan for dimsum while talking about fishing.

I hear you. We can still troll for wahoo's.

Giants will still be around in Jan.

I guess I will go to the GOM to fish sometime in Feb-Mar maybe.

Then maybe come up to fish for tilefish once?

Other than that, I guess I will put a grill on the boat.

Kil, we still had a great time on land yesterday night talking about jigging and popping I can't believe it was 4 hours! Time flies when you're talking/watching fishing I enjoyed sharing and practicing different jigging techniques with each other. We must have looked so funny to the people passing by outside your office haha.

It was funny how 2 phone calls led to 9 Heru poppers off the shelves as well as a few other goodies... haha

I also got a chance to look a little deeper into some of your goodies you have at your shop which I always love to do. It's really the little things and the attention to small details that I love about JM.

1) The Jigging Master Pliers Pouch fits the Duel GT Pliers like a glove. I really like it; very snug. I'll be using it with my SevenSeas Power Support belt with it's D-clip...but down the road I'm also going to attach a lanyard to the pliers just incase by drilling a tiny hole through the handle of the GT pliers... the belt loop on the pouch doesn't allow my Sevenseas belt to pass through it... The belt loop is only about 1.5 inches wide and the Sevenseas belt is about 2 inches wide. Nick is going to use the same setup. JM Pliers pouch, Duel GT Pliers, Sevenseas belt and Sevenseas Power Support Belt.

2) The Jigging Master rod sleeves are awesome! They are the most plush and protective rod sleeves I've ever seen sold with a rod. And I've seen and own OTI, Smith and Hots rod sleeves... Believe or not, I bet it could actually protect your rod from possible bent guides (compared to the other sleeves) if you accidentally dropped your rod from a high vantage point (roof of car of something). Kil actually said he will be stocking a few extra of these rod sleeves as other folks have already asked if they could just buy the rod sleeves for their other rods

3) The Smith jigs look fantastic and should be a nice, cheaper (every few dollars count! lol) alternative to the Hot's Drift Tune jigs. Very nice, wide profile shape for super fluttering action. Possible grouper jigs

4) The JM fighting belt is very well thought of... applying western hemisphere theories to eastern hemisphere techniques of jigging. They made their fighting plate sit right above the knees on the thighs like an AFTCO, Smitty or Braid stand-up fighting belt so you can utilize your legs and your back more than your arms and shoulders when fighting the fish. My Sevenseas belt sits a little higher, almost at my hips and I can tell that I do a lot more arm pumping to fight my fish than Pony does in his videos. He uses his back and bends his legs more and I think it has a lot to do with their style of belt. Kil mentioned that he would like the fighting plate itself to still be a bit wider or maybe even curved at the edges to prevent the plate from sliding.

5) Can't wait until the Ocean God, Alien and Rocket jigs come in You can't really tell from a picture a jig's entire shape.

See you saturday morning Kil !

I hear you there. The SMith MJ210 seems like a good jig. I personally love the Drift Tune Jig it my favorite and that jig reminded me of it but the belly weight is different. I'm interested in testing it.

I too want the JM jigs to come in. Although they are not my style of tuna jig they will be awesome for just about any of the speedy critters. I'm more excited for the JM hooks to come in. Buying assist hooks right now seems to be impossible other than the Kudako, but I'm not likeing the $4.50 per hook.

KIl had me try out that JM rod sleeve. I really like it and will pick up some more next time. They are very useful.

Kil had the hooks that night, but I believe they were in his car so we didn't go out to get them. I'll try and check them out this weekend though...

Hey Kil,

Im going to do a little exploring this October in between Charters. I had a diver friend of mine dive on some inshore wrecks and rock piles looking for a certain species of fish that I asked about. I was more than surprised at what he found and also was able to shoot with his spear gun. He said the spot was holding alot of Big fish and in good numbers. I don't want to say to much incase I can't find what Im looking for but when I catch a few I'll post the Pictures and report. I may need to let the water temp drop a bit but the hunt is on.. Ken
