The only thing I know is that it was hooked while jigging for kingfish (their AJ equivelent)

    Thumbs up nice one..

It is widely believed in Cancun & Isla that the billfish season starts during the winter months..
but as other styles of fishing are introduced in the area we realize that BILLFISH do not leave the area they just behave different and targeting them becomes more challenging perhaps..

As everyone spends countless hours trolling for them, jiggers are more prone to unknown success in Playa del Carmen...
We have documented reports of billfish on every month of the year with jigs...

Note. the local modifications on the jig. 16/0 Mustad circle hook

Once a long liner this guy is the top jigger in playa. I saw the other reports from playa and it is known for the local pangas to fish with no electronics very successfully

Welcome to the site! Glad to see some more people from the Riviera Maya.

I would agree with that there are year long resident billfish in the area. I don't think there numbers are very high.

First time we took the Wasabi out in November we had a sailfish hooked within ten minutes of the marina.

That's certainly not the norm. It's the migration that occurs annually that brings out the numbers.

I sort of think about it like ducks. Every year the ducks migrate but some don't and become residents.

We run a charter boat out of Puerto Aventuras. We ought to get together sometime.

    Cheers,
    Richard
