I have never seen anyone fish for marlin like this. The whole fleet drops down lead and a live mac or hard tail and basically bottom fishes for them. Ive always trolled for them
went out today trying to find some rooster fish even thoug the season is over. Threw poppers, lead and anything i could find. Had about 20 near hookups as they followed my popper constantly but wouldnt commit. Finally i nailed two small ones and a couple of Mahi, and some jacks.
They gave me this really small white stickbait that looks like it costs 20 cents but the damn thing worked. The Mahis and jacks came on the shibuki lure
Here are some images, the first series with the marlin you can see the butterfly jig in its mouth

I know its small but it has been a fish I have wanted to catch my whole life. My butterfly jig after the marlin and the large swells right on the beach killed us all day
Awesome pics gman! I love the baby rooster, that thing is so cool looking. I notice that you attach your hooks right to the split rings- I've always been concerned that doing that could lead to more lost fish. Obviously you haven't seen that- do you do anything special with your split rings or use special ones?
I attach my assist hook to the solid ring that is above the split ring. The setup is used to quickly change out jigs without re rigging a knot. The solid ring is attached to the line and hook the split ring (size 9 or 10 -big) just serves to change jigs all are heavy duty and are made for extremley large fish
Going out tom orrow i want to catch a marlin on a popper.
That's how I've always rigged it too- with the line tied to the welded ring. I guess I got thrown off by that picture that you posted above with the hook directly attached to the split ring, and the welded ring attached to the lure with a split ring- I guess that's less of a jig though and more of a lure.
Anyway, good luck tomorrow! That would be quite a thing to catch a marlin on a jig and a popper on the same trip- talk about breaking new ground!
