    Line rating vs. Lure Rating

As I prepare to attend the High Point Rod building show, another question pops to mind regarding rod blanks.

I have always shopping jigging rods by Lure Rating and basically ignored the Line Ratings. My thinking was that the rod needs to load correctly and lure weight was most important. It seems that they should be Drag Rated vs. Line Rated.

Anyone have any thoughts on what a consumer should do with the Line Rating information, other than totally disregard it?

Whats up Jim. Didn't realize so many of you guys hung out over here.

Seems to me there will be the right mix of people and blanks at High Point that maybe we can try to to 'standardize' things some ? Have been trying to give mine ratings that everyone could relate and it should not be this hard.

gr vs oz, PE vs line test, parabolic vs moderate vs progressive, squidding vs fast jerk vs slow jerk.........plenty of discussions for the lounge.

I think Billy is going to be hanging some 5 gallon buckets of sand off the 3rd fl to assist in the process.

The other NC site has too many rules. When they want to do business, they can call me. I saw them at the Raleigh show and they didn't say anything, so I guess they are cool with having a ghost town for a forum?

But then again, at this point why would I even want to contribute content to them? when most local jiggers are here (the best global saltwater resource on the net, or on fryingpantower.com which most local guys visit and is run by Dave, who is a great moderator) I saw they are planning the FPT get together. I will definetely have some door prizes for that one.

Mike, I hope you set up shop and stay a while. You will appreciate the global perspective you get here. If you get a chance, browse through some of the old threads and you will find some world class info.

    Welcome aboard.
    Jim

All I can say is POOF and I was gone Not mention the moderators process of trying to extort my raw video's from me, for some TV show that no one watches, was both unprofessional and unethical, not mention outright slimey.

Back to the matter at hand regarding blank ratings. What is more important? Line rating or Lure rating?

i like the lure rating, and max drag rating like OTI does..

thats what I, personally, want to know. how it will work the size lure i want the rod for, and how much heat I will be able to put on that rod safely.

i can base my line class around the fact of knowing how much I can put on the rod.

It's like the Metric system - we all know it's a much better standard of measurements, but Americans are so ingrained with inches and gallons, it's just going to stay tht way and we'll be the only country using teh ass backwards method of measurements.

The problem is too many people are set in their ways and refuse to change or look at things from another perspective. The US Manufacturers, along with the vast majority of US Fishermen are used to the line rating of rods, and will always relate to rods rated for 50-80# which fishes better at the higher end of the rating, than a blank which can be fished at 28#'s of drag. HAlf the people fishing are probably incapble of properly setting their drag to 28#'s, let alone be able to select a rod based on that type of a rating.

So as a Manu you have to think - should we change the way we rate our rods to satisy teh .01% of fishermen who want the rods rated like this, or should we continue selling boatloads of rods and blanks with teh old rating system to 99.99% of the fishermen?

The other problem with this is that hte major rod Manu's in the US are located on the WEst Coast, and haven't teh faintest idea or care of what we do on this side, and even in the SOuth. So for them to know how to properly rate jigging specific rods without doing tht type of fishing, is almost impossible.

The common sense compromise is to have BOTH ratings on teh rods/blanks, as Mike stated. When I was selling the GUSA PURJ's, thats' exactly what I did, and it made everyone comfortable when tehy were deciding on whether the blank will work for them or not.

Mike, I'd love to play "dummy lift test" in HP, we'll use cases of beer and coolers instead of a bucket of sand though. We just gotta do it early before teh cases are empty. lol.

Ok, so thats 340.36 grams per can. Thats good. I think I have a 340 gram rated blank.

That means my favorite blank is rated a little less than a tallboy.

Things are sounding much simpler now.

For the lift test I think we need to have Tom bring in one of these
