On most Japanese rod manufactures take line rating and coincide it with drag rating, meaning the rod that is rated for PE8 will also be rated for the highest drag.

Personally I go by jig weight, for me I know I will only think about a rod rated 300-450g rods for the most part. This will allow me to use jigs from 200-400 comfortably

The problem is too many people are set in their ways and refuse to change or look at things from another perspective. The US Manufacturers, along with the vast majority of US Fishermen are used to the line rating of rods, and will always relate to rods rated for 50-80# which fishes better at the higher end of the rating, than a blank which can be fished at 28#'s of drag. HAlf the people fishing are probably incapble of properly setting their drag to 28#'s, let alone be able to select a rod based on that type of a rating.

So as a Manu you have to think - should we change the way we rate our rods to satisy teh .01% of fishermen who want the rods rated like this, or should we continue selling boatloads of rods and blanks with teh old rating system to 99.99% of the fishermen?

The other problem with this is that hte major rod Manu's in the US are located on the WEst Coast, and haven't teh faintest idea or care of what we do on this side, and even in the SOuth. So for them to know how to properly rate jigging specific rods without doing tht type of fishing, is almost impossible.

The common sense compromise is to have BOTH ratings on teh rods/blanks, as Mike stated. When I was selling the GUSA PURJ's, thats' exactly what I did, and it made everyone comfortable when tehy were deciding on whether the blank will work for them or not.

This is a really cool perspective of the whole rating system. I think for a lot of fishing/trolling, line class is all you need.

Here's a question for whole new thread, but how do lures (sea witches/islanders) pull differently from different rods? They must have a different action when pulled from a light tipped rod, than when pulled from a stiff offshore rod.

I didn't think about this until reading this thread, but that is interesting. Maybe we are going to have to start having separate rods for different weighted sea witches/lures for trolling too But seriously...I imagine the lure will swim much more erratically with a light action tip than a stiffer tip. I wonder what works better for certain conditions and species. I don't have the loot to have two rods for each reel (1 lighter and 1 heavier) to vary the lure action but thats a good thing to know!

[QUOTE=Sea Draggin;480332]The other NC site has too many rules. When they want to do business, they can call me. I saw them at the Raleigh show and they didn't say anything, so I guess they are cool with having a ghost town for a forum?

Yeah...those guys must not like you. I posted on one forum asking about getting started with Jigging to make some personal reflections on jigs from different manufacturers and was told that those that did not advertise on the site could not be referenced in my posts. Now..Shimano and Penn don't advertise there either, but I was able to talk about their stuff all day long. Needless to say, this is a better place.
