Cod jigging and grouper jigging is similar. You got to bounce bottom to get bites by up and down jigging motion constantly touching bottom.
Kilsong, I'm pretty new to jigging, but during my trip last weekend, I also found that the groupers only bit when the jig was touching bottom on the end of the downstroke.

Are there exceptions to this? Or does it always need to maintain some contact for groupers.

Even I am qualified for new state record, I am not qualified for IGFA record as I used the rail briefly while fighting the fish.

We caught lots of nice grouper and red snappers daytime and it was all tuna jigging/popping at night.

Here are pictures of yellowfin tuna caught three different popping lures on the first night.

Congratulations Kil! I knew it was only a matter of time that you'd get that record fish on a jig!

Most fish attack jigs when they are falling down, but you feel it when you make a upswing. Shapies control the line on down swing purposely to detect bites and respond quickly, and set the hook immediately when it happens.

Amberjacks must be the exception to the rule. When we would drop to the bottom, then speed reel it back to the surface, they would really eat it up. "Di hrd" told me, with them around, if your jig is still in the water, you are still fishing, so be alert.

Different fish respond to jig differently and you got to adjust your jigging method.
For some fish like AJ, bluefish, yellowtail, the faster you crank the better. Tuna respond to slow moving jigs and fast moving jigs. Most groupers don't chase fast moving jig much, but scampi sometimes hit when you crank fast off the bottom.
