    Kick off Cod Trip

Yesterday we decided to kick off the '09 season with a little ground fishing on Fired Up. On board we had Captain Dick, Squidrig, myself, and Capt Kev. Capt Kev is the mate on Sushi Hunter Charters, so it was great to have him on board- he shared some secrets with us (that I'll share with you all) that made the difference for us yesterday.

After fueling up and commenting that the price of Diesel right now was like a "2 for 1" compared to last season, we were off at the crack of 9

We decided since this was the first run to stay on the inside today and went to Old Scantum where we found quite a few people who had the same idea as us. Things started off slowly for us until Capt Kev shared one of his biggest secrets with us. He took out his jig and explained that since Cod were schooling fish they were educated enough that you can give them some good direction...here was Kevin's direction

I have to say I was skeptical, but soon after we started to hook up pretty well and we were in business

Now, when I tell you that Squidrig has been bit by the jigging bug I'm not kidding. We've been practicing the Money Shot techniques all winter long, and he was so excited to do it he couldn't wait Next time we need to get some gloves on him and he'll really have it down

In all seriousness, it was a great day on the water yesterday- the wind dropped and gave us a nice window late morning/early afternoon and we had a steady pick of decent sized cod all day. We were fishing all jigs. The ones that produced for us were Shimano Flat Side, Butterfly, Smith Jackknife, and a Roscoe jig. We'll be doing a fish taco feed later today with good friends and sharing more laughs. To quote the Nicks...Life is good, no complaints.

Glenn- the flat side still is my favorite jig...the thing seems to catch everything out there.

Cold Waters- not everyone goes to every forum-I put it in the NE forum for those that don't go on this one.

right... i just realized, what you did... i just saw them back to back in the new posts section....

i have never had any luck with the butterfly jigs for ground fish...

someone told me that you just set it on the bottom and kind of just flop it around? the thought of vertical jigging seems strange too, so i have alway did it for about 15' then dropped it and started over or just jigged away like a normal cod jig.

    whats the deal?

We didn't get into any haddoc yesterday, but we were on the inside humps. I've heard that there are some nice haddoc out at Jeffries, and the guys on Stellwagon have obviously been slaying them down there. Good luck when you get out there Paul!

That's it? 10 measley cod? Even with one of Kev's world famous custom cod jigs? And those fansea Shoefish custom acid wrapped rods?

Just pulling your chain, bro. Welcome back! It was a long cold, ice packed winter.
