    Jigs and Braid

I've been given recommendations as to the rod and spinning reel to use for jigging. I've been told to use 80# braid. So do I use anything between the braid and the jig? and if so, do you guys use snap swivals between the braid and mono and between the mono and jig?

    Thanks for your help!

    when i use 80# braid/ PE line
i usually use appox..10' of 80# floro leader tied to PE line direct.
that is for tuna fishing .

if i was using the reel for something else.
you can use heavier or lighter floro.

    some guys do use swivel.
not many use snap....but i have seen some use snap.

Yes, you need some soft mono (or flouro for tuna only) between the braid and the jig. 20ft of 100-130lb will do in most cases.

Windon leaders are absolutely the strongest and no knot can compare, however knots to know are Mid, Sig, uni-uni, slim beauty and PR ( or any other that you can tie and be confident that it can consistently max out a 50lb hand scale )

PS, no swivels unless your rigging a popper.

    1. I use PE6 or PE8 mainline braid which is 80 or 100.

    2. I attached that to my 10' of soft shock leader such as Varivas or Fishermans Stealth shock leader with a PR knot and then connect that to a swivel/split ring combo with a uni knot.

*I do NOT use Fluro unless targeting Tuna and even then I try not to at all costs as I feel it is harder to tie and gets nicked up and shows just as bad as mono

    3. I use a swivel now because I noticed that after several trips I was getting line twist bad from the vertical jigging motion, the swivel stopped that from happening

If fishing some of the fat bodied jigs like drift tune, revolver, etc, you best be using a swivel. If you're walking the dog with the jig then you will without a doubt have line twists as stated by gman.
You can mess up expensive braid quickly, especially on heavy current days.
I use the swivel at the jig not connecting braid to mono/floro.

Mmmm. I learned a little something on this thread myself. I have never experienced the line twist issue. Although, I admit I use a limited selection of styles, but in a bunch of different colors.

So I stand corrected, based on feedback from two experienced jiggers, I now believe a swivel has a place when using some jigs. I do like the idea of putting it closer to the jig, but then again I' must be out of the loop on this one.

    Post huh.

I was using A small sampo Ball bearing snap swivel all season long, and about 5-6 foot of 80lb flouro and had no problems hooking up to tuna!Never lost one fish due to failure.Remember that swivel must be in close enough to jig to gaff A fish because most wont pass through your guides!

The swivel is used to directly connect the jig and the leader as shown below, the motion used when vertical jigging can create twist and that can adversely affect your line strength

It also gives you some tooth protection as well
