Jigging yellowfin tuna out of Oregon Inlet?

Has anyone jigged yellowfin tuna out of Oregon Inlet? I am planning a trip soon and was hoping to find the fish trolling and then jig them and was wondering if anyone has had success doing this. I'll try it regardless, but it would be nice to hear what people have done with success and/or failures.

we caught them last year about this time jigging over slicks. 150gm bethos, purples and blues.

we started out trolling, but the boats(lots of traffic) pushed them deep, jigging atleast got the box full.

Well that is a really good idea. Espescially when you are marking them down 100' or so and they are'nt biting up top. Then you could drop a jig down right to them. I wonder if they will prefer a slow yo-yo or a fast retrieve

You should check out the black/purple 160g Katana's. Had them made just for what your talking about.

we were dropping down 4 colors and ripping it up to 1( whats that 120ft up to 30ft?) the faster the better. Granted none were huge, but 25 to 35 pound class taste just fine.

I dont think the color matterd much, by the end of the trip most of the paint was gone off the jigs.

Thanks for the replies. As soon as we get two days with a good forecast we are going. If we're lucky it won't be too much longer.

Danny, were you marking a good number of fish deeper or were they pretty spread out?

Jim, I'll let you know when we go. Hopefully we will have room for another. There probably won't be but 4-5 days notice. Some of my family wants to do the trip, but with such short notice its might be hard for them to make it. We are planning on fishing 2 days.

Looking forward to the report, good luck down there. We plan on taking the boat there this winter for the blackfin, YFT, and BFT. I like speed jigging and that should work great for the YFT as well. But I would try all methods of jigging to see what they want that day.

I'll be doing at least one BFT jigging trip in late winter also. That was fun this past winter. We had multiple shots the day I went with two fish caught. I personally had 3 bites with 2 that came unbuttoned and one shameful knot failure

    btw, nice tuna trav!
