    JIGGING RODS, GRIP DAMAGE

alot of good talk about fore grips getting cut by the line.
i figured a seprate thread would be fun.

there was a post about a factory rod that was used to jig with having the fore grips cut,

also a while ago a Big trolling rod was the center of fore grip cut talk, and a lost fish.

as a rodbuilder we try to set the rods up to keep the line off the front grip, and to not have it touch the blank, when bent fighting a fish.
    thats what we teach.

as a jigger i know a parabolic rod is usually prefered.
as a rodbuilder i know a parabolic rod will bend deep into the blank when being bent.
this makes it hard to setup a rod without cutting the grip, especially if you apply to much drag on rod.

take a 300g rod. and 100# fish. some may get 20# of drag with it before it bends to much and cuts the grips.
if you go to a 500g rod which is heavier rated. you may not cut the grip. with the same 100#fish

to a rodbuilder it just seems like the wrong rod for the job,

as a jigger if i MUST use a 300g rod the get bite. and a 500g rod wont work to get bit, well then my rod grip gets cut.
if i can get bit using a 400g or 500g and not cut my grips,
    why wouldnt i?

it seems that some guys dont mind the grips getting torn up.
as a jigger/ builder i really dont care,
and as a rodbuilder, i REALLY dont care, IF YOU DONT care.
    it keep me doing repairs

and sorta kills the resale value of a possible VERY expensive rod

I'm still learning the whole 300, 400, 500, 600gram terminalogy with Japanese jigging rods.

What do you mean when you say you might not get a bite on a 500g rod vs. a 300gram rod? Are you implying that the jig action would be different enough so that the fish might not like that?

    some say a stiffer rod,
or a rod with the "wrong" action wont work the jigs as well.
    so less bites.
i am not sure i agree 100% with that.
i have seen times where one rod was working better than others,or one jig is working better.
but then also seen the same rod not work on other trips, where guys were catching.

some guys use outriggers and boat motion and get bit..
i am still trying to figure out their ratings.

    i dont care

all my trevala's foregrips have been cut, usually by a 20lb+ grouper trying to break me off something. I know thats something we just have to deal w/using these parabolic rods and catching big boys on them. beats the hell outta using a 4.0 or 6.0 reel and meat stick/broom handle rod and keeps it fun and challenging. anyway, i look @ them as battle scars, something to show, yeah I caught a monster on this settup. only alternative is using a heavier rod, which aint fun to jig with. weigh the odds, im sticking w/the lightweight parabolic rods and dealing w/it.

Wouldn't another guide fix this paul?

I am also confused about the gram ratings on rods.

For tuna fishing is a parabolic rod really necessary? It almost seems like a standard jigging rod with a heavy action would be better for tuna? no?

Just trying to understand this all.

I suck at jigging....bad lol. It's kind of embarassing.

check the "rod rating" thread , hopefully it will get into detail about gram rated rods.

parabolic rod in tuna fishing are nice..they make it easier on the angler.
the only problem with some. if using a "light" parabolic rod for BIGGER fish... they cut the grips
the right paraboilic action wont cut grips.
some may say it wont jig right.

we have been using slower action 8' rods for jigging for years..
they are prettty stiff for working jigs..but have caught fish

See the problem i encounter is the diverse need for jigs JUST for tuna. For example, this past season at the claw.

Some days 4oz. butterfly jigs were producing. Other days it was like 8-10oz. diamonds worked off the bottom.

4oz-10oz. is a huge difference in jig weight. The rod i have is a cheapy and middle of the road until i can afford something better (its tough helping to pay the costs of a $150k + boat at 25 years old )

It seemed like when i put a butterfly on, the action from that road really didn't help with the jigging at all.

sounds like you got priorities mixed up jay, boat cost so much you cant afford tackle.

Doesn't the parabolic action of the jiggin rod also help with the lack of line stretch since most guys are using relatively short topshots of mono?
