i figured a seprate thread would be fun.

there was a post about a factory rod that was used to jig with having the fore grips cut,

also a while ago a Big trolling rod was the center of fore grip cut talk, and a lost fish.

as a rodbuilder we try to set the rods up to keep the line off the front grip, and to not have it touch the blank, when bent fighting a fish.
    thats what we teach.

as a jigger i know a parabolic rod is usually prefered.
as a rodbuilder i know a parabolic rod will bend deep into the blank when being bent.
this makes it hard to setup a rod without cutting the grip, especially if you apply to much drag on rod.

take a 300g rod. and 100# fish. some may get 20# of drag with it before it bends to much and cuts the grips.
if you go to a 500g rod which is heavier rated. you may not cut the grip. with the same 100#fish

to a rodbuilder it just seems like the wrong rod for the job,

as a jigger if i MUST use a 300g rod the get bite. and a 500g rod wont work to get bit, well then my rod grip gets cut.
if i can get bit using a 400g or 500g and not cut my grips,
    why wouldnt i?

it seems that some guys dont mind the grips getting torn up.
as a jigger/ builder i really dont care,
and as a rodbuilder, i REALLY dont care, IF YOU DONT care.
    it keep me doing repairs

and sorta kills the resale value of a possible VERY expensive rod

    Paul,

Nobody have to live with that if they get the right stuff or the right builder!

A properly built conventional rod will never have line eating into the grips regardless of the action of the rod!

You never see that happen to high end JDM products.

    hi randy..first post welcome..
you know most of the guys

as a rodbuilder i felt the same way.
but i know it can happen with some rods.
    usually if they are overdraged.

it does happen to highend production rods and cheap shemano rods.
and even customs made by some pretty good builders.

i started this to get more infor on what the guys like, and use.
and i am getting some good info from some guys.
this will be a big help in future jigging rod builds.

    you cant overdrag a grouper

if you give him an inch he will break you off. so cinched drags is the only way. i like jigging grouper and a 20lber will bend anything......only way i can see a rod not bending like that is using a broomstick. and that gives no action.......i just accept the fact thats the type of tackle i like to use and its gonna be pushed to the limit. and foregrips will be cut into, price to pay. and im having fun the all the while!!!! my friend has one of them smith amj??? and it bends like a noodle, if you "high stick it" it will break, whats a man to do thats one reason i stick w/trevalla, break it and it gets replaced no charge.

If an angler knows what he is doing, rods will not break so easily. only a broomstick will not break if high sticked. High drag pressure can also be applied with these kind of rods if the rod is under the arm instead of constantly sticked into the gimbal, its a matter of when to give and when to take.

ive only broke 1 trevalla fishing and i usually set the hook pretty hard and try to turn his head. Im a high sticker sometimes depending on when the fish hits and how much line i have off the bottom. i never ever use a belt grouper slapping but i will use one on monster aj's. i like the lever drags on my accurates because once he's off the bottom a 20' i'll back it off some easily. i want to see about getting a custom rod this season.
    are you randy from aps?

    Yes I am.

Trevallas are not really meant for grouper fishing, more like a snapper rod!
