I choose my rods based on a combination of factors.

What they are line rated for? example would be PE8 is rated for a higher drag than a PE4.

Whats the jig size I normally use? I know that I use jigs from 200-400 max with 250 being the average so I always try to use a rod that is rated for around 400g's.

Bend: Once I have teh classification ie 400g I will look for a rod within that class that has a parabolic bend which is my prefered bend type

Note: as a rule of thumb I like to use a rod that is slighter higher rated in class than the intended jig. If i am going to use 200g jigs all the time I would pick a 300g rod so the rod isnt maxed out.

Thanks for that, gman. That jives with my thinking as I try to select my new stick. Your range of jig weights paired with a 400g parabolic rod exactly suits my intended application.

Useful thread, paul... and very timely

So I'm a Tackle tart but I tend to under fish weight wise, rod and reel wise and adjust the terminal tackle to suit, eg use a 30lb stick and reel but fish it as an 50lb set up, I have generally found most rods are UNDER rated and can handle alot bigger fish than the were so "named" to take, therefore the action of a 250 gr rod will make a 400gr jig work. my 2cent
    thanks good info.
