No need for backing just spool it all with the PE line why have connections when you don't have too and if your putting 300 yards of PE on in the first place you wont be saving alot of money at that point

In our ne canyons how important is the backing ? I Have 75 yards of 80 Lb mono backing tied with the sebile knot (which I picked up here and is killer squid dude) to 330 yards of of the diawa multi colored braid on a 50 trinidad (sweet reel!!!!!!) I figure I'll throw another 75 yard of mono ontop of it. I figure 480 yards of line will handle all most anything these waters will throw at us on a jig outfit. What do you think Paul? I for one highly Doubt I will ever see that 75 yards of backing, or even the sebile knot, for 6 years from now when I strip the reel to put new line on it. 1300 feet is a lot of line when we talk about dropping a jig 40-200 feet down.

whats the best way to connect the two; braid to the softer PE braid? uni to uni? how about for attaching a top shot of mono to the PE?

I honestly feel your making a mistake by connecting the two lines I would go solid. Think about it, we spend crazy dollars on jigging rods, reels, jigs and teh only thing connecting it all together is the line. Always go top shelf on the line as its your lifeline.

As far as connections from line to leader you can do a uni-uni knot which holds up great, a PR-knot, mid-knot, albright just to name a few. Low profile and strong

unless you plan on spooling a 30-class reel with PE line (not sure why the hell you'd do that) - 300yds will fill most jigging reels with an appropriate weight. We probably got about 350-400 of Zenaq PE8 on the 665 (not the narrow) - but if I had to leave 300yds on there it wouldn't be much of a concern. At the right drags, normal fish won't trip 300yds of line off.

I agree with Glenn - connections make me nervous. i just put a strip of electrical tape on the spool and fill it up.

FYI - our alberto knots were busted a few times this past weekend. I'm going to learn the PR knot before going back to NC. Chip had it and it looked awesome.

it goes through perfect, just make sure when you cut the tag ends off the burn the exposed lines to soften them and add a dab of superglue. It wont break

Also if you are using it braid to mono leader double the amount of turns on the braid side so a minimum of 10 braid turns
