    Jigging Reel

I have 2 Shimano Torium 30's matched with Trevalla Jigging Rods and love the setups however, I am looking into getting another jigging reel and will match it with another Trevalla Jigging Rod...I just don't know If I should stay with the tried and true Torium's (no problems with whatsoever) or look into getting something a little different. I was thinking maybe the Penn Torque or Shimano Trinidad....any input or suggestions???

Well I don't jig but I can help about pure reel info. The shimanos are always going to be about the same as there daiwa and any other counter parts so I really don't think all this huss and fuss about the Torium VS saltist is really idiotic and I bet it is the same for the new Quantum and the fin-nor off shore. So what I am saying it is about preference and nothing else and it is vary repeatable. So I would but a saltist more people use them I figure it is the slightly better made reel.

What I can tell you about the Toriums is that they have serious problems with the anti reverse bearings going out. I had a 20 and it was in the shop more than on my boat this past summer. It broke 3 out of 5 trips. I sent it bak to Shimano Cal for warranty work each time and they finally replaced it after the last time, so say what you want but Toriums don't hold up to the riggors of speed jigging trip in and trip out. I now have a Daiwa Saltist and haven't had a lick of problems, knock on wood.

You might hear that about a Saltist, but I and 3 other buddies have experienced it with a Torium. Don't get me wrong I liked the feel of the reel but you can't crank down the drag, (which is what you need for jigging because if a grouper hits it close to the bottom you only have one shot at keeping his head from getting under structure.) and the anti-reverse not fail, the difference I am told is the Daiwa has a 2 pawl backup like the old bait casters where the little pawl falls against the gear and simply can't reverse plus it also has the instant anti-reverse bearing. I just knew I couldn't keep going at the rate I was going with the Torium.

No don't get me wrong I like the saltist and would take it over the others anyday but what I am saying is all this huss and fuss is useless.

If you like Tevala rods, then keep Torium.
The reason is that Trevala rods are inshore rods and it is good upto 16 - 18 lbs drag and you can break anti-reverse gear of Torium if you use with over 20 lbs drag.

The advantage of Saltist over Toriums is you can give more max drag upto 22 - 24 lbs.
However while the inside parts of Torium is exactly same as the Trinidad, the inside parts of Saltist is not the same as Saltiga. It cost over $100 to get Saltiga drag washers for Saltist. However, you can get carbontex drag washers for $20. Some believe Carbontex drag washers are better than Saltiga drag washers.
For inshore species, I like Torium better than Saltist.
