Ok. I got a hold of one of my cod fishing buddies who is one of the guys this is a prototype for. He was playing with and pulling on the busted Calstar last weekend and remembered he liked the way it felt when I held the blank at a little under a foot in from the tip. Guess I will start there!

No deep water to play with around here

The Rodmaker Question I saw was about how trimming affects the action, from the butt and tip. I just want to make sure they can sling a heavier jig w/o snapping the tip! The guys I talked to like the tip stiffer to snag the cod as well, so I will go with a 14 and see how it is from there!

some blanks will have a heavy tip 26 or bigger and be softer tip section,
they are "special" for up north cod, deep water, long cast, big jigs. and hopefully big fish

Yeah, they were showing me some of their cod rods that barely bend at the tip! The 14 sized tip with this Grafighter is pretty similar!! I got the handle, reel seat, foregrip, winding check and tip top glued up, working on the spacing now. I did some play casting with my Tekota 800, 16oz jig. Easy lob 25 yds is no problem! I didn't go full power because I am still learning to cast conventionals and am between 2 houses and a shed out in my landing field. Time to go scare the trout at my clubs pond again!!

I also did some bends with it. Holy COW! This is a powerful blank!!! I put my Tekota 800 on it, had the drag pretty much cranked down, tied it to the bottom of a picnic table. Pulling drag out even with the reel almost buttoned down. Hmmm. Brought out the Avet 50W 2 speed! This was set to pick up a 11K/22# Olympic weight lifting plate just past the strike. I did that, put the rear grip between the legs and pulled up, drag coming out nicely at strike. Went to full, prob mid 20's at least, drag was still slipping and the blank wasn't bent all that much! I would not want to get a Tuna on this sucker! The tip bends and then it just shuts off! This has a ton of lifting power in it!

As you can see, its pretty dang stiff! Next time, I'm gonna use a 800M and trip to a 14, should bend a little more! The first is the drag at strike, around 18-20# of drag estimated, the next is at full, maybe mid 20's, but my Dad got the pic before the drag was slipping and I was still pulling up on it.

Rod has a 14" EVA rear, 2" crutch type butt cap, Fuji 24mm Boat reel seat, 13" Eva foregrip, Sin2 guides and tip top.

For Gods sake, next time do that with a fighting belt!!! Men everywhere are cringing at the thought of an accidental line breakage.

That setup looks like a beast.

LOL. Belt was in the truck, no gimbal or butt cap on it yet so it fits into my dryers chuck easier! I picked up a little spring scale for up to 50# today, strike on the Avet is 17#, Full is 24#, Tekota drag was around 18-22, depending on which click I had it on. I played with the static testing a little more, couple little tweaks here and there. But I can actually feel the blank flexing near the foregrip, so it bends down lower than I thought!

This sucker IS a beast! I took it to a local store, guy said it should be fine for cod, not too stiff! I'm gonna hold off on wrapping it till next week I think, I ordered 8, 12, and 16 SiN2 guides, no 10's. In the static testing, I'm using a 12 tiptop, 8, 12, 12, 12, 12, 8, and 2 8's for bumpers. I would prefer to use 10's for bumpers for knot clearance. I didn't even use any of the 16's, so I will probably order up 4 or 5 10's and a couple more 12's to play with the static more. I may even be able to go with 12's and 10's, its a slow flex now, so the guides load pretty evenly.

    Hotshot,
Tell us a little about striper jigging. 30 years ago we were doing it pretty regularly using hopkins spoons.
How are you guys doing it. What size jigs and rods are you using?

Our winter fishery is for schoolies, 20-24 inch fish the occasional 28-32. Not a lot of skill to it, find birds through just about anything you have that looks like a sand eel or a herring of 8 inches. I am particular to an ava or hopkins. I generally use a 965 with 30 braid and 30 flourocarbon medium action with fast taper, right now I use a St Croix .

For freshwater, we used a 2 ounce hopkins. Is that about the same size you are using on those fish?
