Jigging in Playa del Carmen Mexico

The girlfriend and I flew down to Playa del Carmen, Mexico where my dad has a condo for a extended weekend getaway. She is a good sport about my fishing addiction, so I was able to get out for a couple hours in the morning and afternoon yesterday.

For those of you that don't know, the waters in the strait between the yucatan and cozumal drop off rapidly less than a kilometer off shore. The drop holds big schools of AJs in the 30-60 lb. range as well as a mix of pelagics in about 300-400 feet of water. Some of the panga fleet started jigging for AJ's a year or so ago and it has since become the choice fishing method for a good portion of the commercial and sport boats....granted no one has a depth finder, and the common jigging set-up consists of penn senators spooled with mono attached to a trolling rod...seriously!

My dad and I have brought our own gear down, and fish with a guy who at least has a GPS with some proven numbers on it. It's frustrating to not know if you are actually dropping into fish or not, but for $125 for a half days fishing you can't really expect too much.

I caught my first ever king mackeral on a williamson abyss in the morning

We estimated it at 30-35#. Does that make it a "smoker"?

Went back out in the windy afternoon and caught two AJs 40 and 50 lbs. Regretfully, I forgot to bring my camera. The fish were nothing to take note of, but the whole scene of jigging in a tiny panga in 10-12 foot swells while parasailers are flying overhead would've been nice to capture on film.

I've got a newfound respect for those of you that regularly have to use 300+ gram jigs to hook-up and land fish in 300+ feet of rough water with heavy current. That 50 lb. AJ was more work than the 100 lbers. I've caught in Costa Rica.

Very cool. I don't think that there's anything better to get the fishing instincts going than fishing off of a panga for a day or two. Awesome report, thanks for sharing!

Nice videos...you guys definitely know what you're doing!

Who do you fish with in PDC? Does the boat have fish finding equipment?

Have you caught many fish jigging besides Amberjack? My dad has caught a few blackfin tuna and some barracuda, and I caught a king mackeral...that has been it though....mostly amberjack. Does anyone ever catch big grouper, pargo, or wahoo on jigs?

How is the jigging up by cancun?

When are the jigging tournaments? Maybe my father and I can take part in the next ones.

we fish whit roberto navarro & gustavo silva (wherever gus is the artistic name ),he have a panga & does not have devices like fishfinder, chartploters, gps, but if the money is not problem, you can get a bigger boat and equipped
