The rod would be the first thing i would upgrade; but carbontex drag washers will give you all the drag you need in the 30. If I was chasing 150lb BF's i would look at the OJ 5000 or the accurate B2 665N

I find it very difficult to find Japanese models that are readily available in the states... if you know of any good sites, please let me know.

Also, if you can recommend where to get the drag upgrades, thats would be awesome... would it just be carbontex drag upragde?

Shimreels on Ebay can get any reel you want and Jarvis is a great joker. If you dont see it on his site, just sk him to get one for you.
If you get an Ocea Jigger (get the P model which is 4.1:1 ratio and grey in colour.Gold model is 4.9:1), make sure you get the carbontex drag washer upgrade and also a Cal's drag plate installed. This upgrade will last for years,be as smooth as AND instead of 32lb of drag you will get way over 45lbs.

    Good fishing.
PS. I have all the reels you ask about and the little JM PE4 is a honey,so light but so powerful. I have also just received a PE5 model but havent been out yet.Watch out fishy

All the OJ 4000 and 5000 i have seen had more drag than there specifications stated. With the carbontex and the drag plate 50lbs is easily obtained but not needed. The carbon tex are smoother and cleaner drags then the dartanium drag washers not to mention they will last longer.

What is your thought behind the rod upgrade over the reel upgrade?

The trevalla will leave you wanting more, Right now your reel will put out more drag than your rod can handle.

Just depending on your budget, here is a few rods to look at. Under $300 I would get a OTI G3 400g Factory or Custom(JPR rods), Over $400 I would look into a Smith AMJ52EX, Shimano Blue Rose (love the one I have), Hots Wei world 52xx and carpenter OH56MH. There are several other rods out there that are just as good, but I haven't used them to make comments on them, and there's others that I have used that don't make my list.

Like them all to be honest( tackle slut i know ) when the big fish are around i like the OJ4000P on a JM PS 400 or 450, deep water(500-800ft)use the OJ5000P on the 450JM
For fun on light tackle i use AMJ52H with either a JM PE4 or Torsa 16N.
Just got a Synit acid wrap 333Grey Ghost that i have put the PE5 on,looking good on Sunday/Monday.
    Beware fishy's
