Ishidai reel is good enough, but I recommend to use PE8 instead of PE6. It is not AJ jigging. 80 - 100 lbs leader line is good enough for tuna jigging.
As you fish with 15 guys, I suggest to use 400g - 500g rod.
Capt Jeff is very respecatble captain and he doesn't mind using braided line for jigging. Buy a few metallic sardine jigs and you are all set.
Thanks Kil,

I will be sure to make the adjustments.

We just returned form the Canyon and had a very good trip. Maybe it was the threat of "Hanna" moving into our area later tonight, or they just realized it's September 4th and it's time to feed. Whatever the reason there were big schools of tuna under the boat and they were hungry.
We were anchored in the canyon by 10:45PM. Our first fish hooked at 1AM was a 110LB swordfish caught by Mike McGregor from Staten Island, NY. About an hour later the next fish was a 10LB mahi-mahi. It was quiet after that. There was plenty of life in the area, squid, anchovies and even a 100LB plus white marlin swimming around the boat but no sign of tuna yet. By this time I thought we would already have a few tuna in the boat and even considered moving but decided to wait it out.
Finally, at 3AM "all star", Dennis Muhlenforth, Hockessin, DE hooked and landed the first tuna. There was a flurry of action after that and 5 more tuna were boated. At 4AM the bite really began. We had as many as 6 tuna on at a time before there was a lull. We were catching the smaller yellowfin until just before sunrise when we broke several fish off. The big boys moved in after that. They were all 60LBS and up. There were a few that weighed 80LBS and the largest tuna of the trip was

140LB yellowfin landed by Pat Sullivan from Staten Island, NY.
Tuna were caught on bait and jigs. I managed to spend a little time jigging and landed one of the smaller yellowfin at night and an 80LBer in the morning.
Nuno DeCosta from Scarsdale, NY boated a 76LB yellowfin and two more yellowfin.
Dennis Muhlenforth from Hockessin, DE landed two yellowfin and one longfin tuna,
Jeff Pascocello from Staten Island, NY caught two 60LB yellowfin.
There were tremendous readings of tuna and bait under the boat at times from 50' down to 220'. Most of the fish were hooked from 80' to 100' down. A few were also caught on float lines.
There was a good amount of squid and anchovies in the area. It looks good for upcoming trips and the fishing should only get better

That style will be new for me. I never used a rod that long nor do I have popping lures. I was just going to use the rod jigging style or for top water Mahi.

This rod is a replacement for the OTI 600g 5'6" conventional that broke on me. And the strongest rod they have in stock until the end of the year is the popping rod, so I guess I will learn how to use it.

Thanks.
I will know for sure in the next two weeks exactly which rod I will be using. I get a message from the guys at OTI regarding my replacement rod. I might actually get the new production model of the jigging rod sooner than expected, otherwise I will use the popping rod they have available.

P.S.

Will you have a JM 400g or 500g Acid Rod on the trip? If so I would like to try it to see if I will like it.

Ty
