Had the window to fish today. The weather wasn't the greatest but was the first shot in three weeks.
Crew was Matt and Ben, a couple guys I use to work with. I think it was Ben's first time hard core jigging... he will feel it tomorrow!
Started off early out of CB... only truck in the lot. One thing my boat will never be is "winterized"
Had a following sea after about the 30 mile range. We stopped to look for a ARS in the 40 mile area. Nothing on that. Next stop was in 220' water temp came up to 70. It was an AJ on every drop. We used 200-300g jigs in flatside and Katanas. Ben and Matt were taking two fish turns on the 20K Stella. Size ranged from 20-45lbs. Pushed off a little way from there to a nice nugget in 250'. Matt had a good grouper pull off before landing more jacks. Matt wasn't giving up the Stella so Ben dropped the 40N. This was his first jig drop on a conventional. Didn't take long to bow that one also. His first fish was a sweet 24 lb blackfin on my favorite tuna jig the Ayasugi ... Give me back my lucky rod!!!
From there we went to the 300 hole. It was a football field sized area stacked with jacks from bottom to 80' down. It was all you wanted. There were some bigger fish on this spot also. I broke off two big pulls before going to a heavier leader and Matt caught his biggest jack so far. It weighed right at 80 lbs on the sling (see pic) I made a wile back to take the guesswork out of jumbo jacks.
Next stop was a big drop off that goes from 260-370'. Not as many jacks as it normally holds but I got a few scamps on a Pot Roast 300g and one small snowy off it. I also got sharked once and lost my jig. Matt got sharked by a 9' monster but got has jig back!
The condition deteriorated to 3-4'ers but we stuck it out and kept fishing till 2pm at which time we ran inshore, stopped on some bottom and caught some triggers and scamps. It wouldn't be a winter trip if I didn't bring in a fatty gag so I went ahead and did that. Here are some pictures.
How about that... got back and still the only truck in the lot!
Love the glide of the Katana.
300g flatside
Citation blackfin on the char/glow Ayasugi
Scamps on.... you guessed it POT ROAST! Too bad I got the last ones he had!
Trigger fish eat jigs like candy.
How may time can a guy get lucky with the gags?
Here is a picture of the device I came up with to weigh the big jacks this year. It worked perfect on Matt's fish today. I didn't get a picture of the fish in the sling as I wanted to get it back in the water. I will put the fish picture up when he sends it to me.
