    Jig day at sea 3/31/09

Looked like everyone with blue water in their veins went yesterday. We fished a well known spot and had to wait for several trollers till we could get on something to drop on. First drop Chad gets a Thread Fin and Pete pulls off a monster?

Most of the jacks we caught were micro... under 30 lbs. Not that we were looking for big ones just yet. Looking for a hoo. There were several caught near us by trollers. We had a bunch of busted up jigs but no "Barred Mack" for us. What we did find was the best deep water (relative) grouper bite of the year so far. We moved away from most of the boats that stopped trolling and started jigging and got on some red grouper on a little nothing bottom with no marks. Next went looking for some marks to try Pete's new Riley Rod on a bigger jack. First drop can't get the reel engaged fast enough to set the hook good but get him anyways (one for you Jim) Pete follows seconds later with a double header on low 20's gags. Chad scores his second AP. Then Pete hooks a good jack only to pull it off after a three minute fight. He thought he was to high up to get another but he was wrong... this one makes for the Big Rock but armed with a Saltiga Blast 25 lbs of drag and the 250g Riley he subdues the 55"fl jack. We weren't able to weight the fish because I lost my sling last trip. I had it out to weight a fish and put it on the side of the walk around and it must have flew out somewhere. It is a piece of blue tarp with wooden handles and should have dolphin under it by now

That looks like a great day. I might try it Sunday a little closer to the beach.

Way to go, looks like a blast. Looked like the new rod held up nicely and the bend in it didn't hurt it to much. Got to go fishing soon or somebody is going to get hurt. Great job guys.

Excellent report and pictures, as usual captain Steve, Pete and crew.
Impressive jack on any tackle, more so on the little stuff Pete is using.
    Keep on catchin' and postin'
