Well there's japanese style and east coast style. East Coast style is mark the fish, drop to their depth, and jig.

that i do know. But there is also butterfly, speed, extreme, deep, blah blah blah.

To me the only real difference is either you mark the fish and drop to them or work the water column looking for them.

Good question, and I'm looking forward to the answer too. I think (but could be way off) that "Japanese style" jigging is more of a speed jigging with shorter rods- drop to the bottom and crank up to the top...and repeat. The shorter rods make it easier to do for long periods of time as they are less fatiguing.

For "east coast" style, it is just like Big Jay said, and the rods are a bit longer so that you don't have to lift the rod as far to get a greater tip movement- therefore less fatiguing for that style of jigging.

Take that with a grain of salt though...I might have just pulled that out of my butt.

the jap style uses rods that are short and usually MAX 6' most of the rods are 5'8" or less . they have a drop and jerk and wind type of jigging usually covering alot of water depth, with nonstop jerk and reel, the east coast style can use a longer rod. and usually fish are marked on the finder and the lure is droped to the fish and is jigged in the "zone" using ALOT less energy, which is nice for us "old guys"

The excellent people at Andros Boatworks sent me a couple Trevala rods and Torium reels as a thanks for buying one of their boats and having it shipped down here. Those are the toughest, springiest rods I ever saw. Its like a fly rod, but you can bend it double.
The reels have a 6. something to one retrieve ratio. Fast.
Theres a video on the technique. I dont have a link, but if you Google "Spanish Fly butterfly jigging" you will find it.

First time I tried it here, third cast, I hooked up with this jack:

That's what I pulled on board, right there. The cutting board is 18" long. So I would say butterfly jigging has been shown to catch short, gutless fish.
