does anyone switch out the J hooks that come standard on the hammered diamonds to some what of a stronger j hook? if so what do they use.
I've used circle hooks for years on Hopkins spoons for redfish in the surf and for topwater for redfish. Beats J-hooks hands down. Doesn't work at all for bluefish and spanish. If its a slow retreive or fish are biting on the drop...circle hook should work (i.e. yo-yo jigging),if you are Japanese speed jigging...only J hooks.
I have only owned hammered diamonds for a few trips and kept the J hooks on them. I found that every drop the hook would get fouled on the leader...I stopped using them...anyone else have that problem??
YES YES YES
Throw those things away. Try using Gama Siwish no smaller than 7/0. Also bigger live ait hooks work well or even a jigging hook like owner SJ41
Back to the circle hook thing. I'm not a fan of it. Alot of NE guys fishing the night bites have really good success using the circles. The main reason being that they are not jigging. Many times they put the jig down at proper depth and send it out on the rigger letting the boat swing it. Its very effective!!!! The odds of boat ripping out the hook before fish turns in decreased significantly.
I like single assist hook with biggest damn hook you can find. Bigger the gap the better. Fishermens, Owners, Shouts, JM's, etc.
I would have to agree with the above, Big hooks!! And I replace all the hooks on my diamond jigs with Gami Siwash hooks...
