A hello and of course a question

First off I wanted to say hello. I have been a long time lurker on this board and you guys have provided some great information and at times, great entertainment.

I am thinking about purchasing a Saltiga 40 and looking for a rod to go with that set up.

Have any of you used the thor rods that Riley Rods offers and what are your impressions?

I am looking for options in that price range to match up with the Saltiga targeting just about anything I can find off the Outer Banks of NC.

I can't speak with any other brand or model of rod.

I have a Saltiga 40 on a Jig Master 350 and am very happy with the set-up. I fish the normal NC stuff as well.

The next bite on a jig.
For the saltiga 40, what weight rod will you put with it?

For the tiles and yellowfin, I would think a 350g rod would be an excellent choice. A 240-300 jig should load it, but you will still have the backbone for yellowfins, which would put you just about right for the jigging out of OI.

You could get some super heavy jigs for those bad current days, however even with 3 knots of tide, we were still able to jig bluefins with that weight jigs.

    Thanks guys.
For the rod I would most of the time be using the 200-300gr jigs but may have to go larger and was leaning towards 300-400gr rod.

I really have been back and forth between a Saltiga 30 and 40. I think I may come up a bit too short on line capacity unless I went down in rating to a point where I may be pushing the yellowfin/large AJ envelope.

I really am just getting back into offshore stuff after years of raising kids and being in the Coast Guard (aviation) so your advice is most welcome.

For Oregon Inlet fishing, I would recommend the 40. You will have the capacity for a large tuna or deep dropping for tiles/snowies. You will rarely feel outgunned. With the 30T(Which should be named 40N), you might stretch its limits.

talk to mike at riley rods, he can set you up with what you need. better get on the ball with it though as i am sure he will be getting booked up with charters and have less time to build rods
