    Haphazard Mexico Report

I learned about a neat place tonight called Isla Mujeres. Apparently its an island about 20 minutes from Cancun that is very small and intimate. Friendly people that are glad you are there.

The main fishing is sails of course and thats what everyone targets, but the boy I talked to tonight told us about some incredible jigging opportunities there. This is not his website, but check out the grouper on the side of this page.

    http://www.islamujeressportfishing.c...ng&tackle.html

He has a commercial background and runs a Carolina boat call the Haphazard. They take the boat there from mid Jan to mid March. He told us that last winter, which was his first one there, on his first drop with a 5 hook commercial rig, they caught 2 groupers, 2 american reds and an AJ that the electric almost couldn't bring up. He said it is untapped bottom fishing/jigging along with a shot a sail.

He said sometimes they will troll for sails and if they come across a good mark, they will stop and drop bucktails on it and kill. And that if they mark in water over 40 fathoms and drop on it, that they are going to get slammed.

But he did say that he prefers to either troll or bottom fish, but not both as described. His quoted rates were a lot higher than the operation above, but he is running a brand new world class sportfisher, so the rent is high.

Anyway, thought I would share. In my mind I'm packing my bags, but my wallet says No, No, No. I'll just have to dream.

Not sure about the bottom fishing

But the sailfishing is top notch. And honestly it is worth it just to hang out on the island. SO laid back and nice. Def. worth the trip.

North Beach on Isla is a blast... you just sit in your lounge chair and the bartender brings you all the drinks you want...

    Sea draggin,
Is Backlash still running the haphazard? I have fished with and around in the past (years ago) he is a great guy.

Sounds like fun to me but my wife and wallet says NO NO,

    Michael
