I know to get the jig to the bottom and try to keep it in the zone, but how about everyone's preferences on jigging methods??

I have recently purchased multiple jigs in varying sizes, colors and weights, I plan on trying them in some of the deep waters in the Norfolk Canyon as well as some other structures off the Virginia and NC coasts. I am looking for BIG GROUPERS, mostly snowy as well as wreck fish.

I am in the process of a making a few modifications to my deep drop techniques as well as additional modifications to the jigs themselves.

    Any help would be appreciated.
Wow, now this is a tuff one. I have fished for Snowies but not with jigs. I found that getting them on bait is tuff enough, but on jigs will require the right conditions to get them...little wind and current. Your line will need to be no stretch and rod will need to be stiff to get the hook set. I know when we bait fish them in that depth, most of the time we were using 5+ pounds of weight to get it down due to the current.
I know this is not much help to you but maybe their is someone here that can help you out more with jigging that deep.

What a great thread Lee. It's nice to revisit some of the "old" stuff.

Hey Paul, Sorry to answer you a little late here but tise the season for me now. Yep, we been doing a little here and there and thinking about doing some tomorrow if I can find someone to go with me. Here is a picture from 6-25 trip and a link to the thread I did on it in case you missed it. One more thing...not all the Groupers were caught on jigs in the pictures but the first of the day was as well as the second largest of the day. By buddy Gene long and I were commercial fishing that day, but I do have to play with my jigs. God I love what I do...

Here are pictures of snowy grouper and wreckfish caught on jigs.
The snowy grouper was caught near oil rig in Gulf of Mexico in 800 ft and the wreckfish (hapuka) was caught in NZ. Both were caught on a 400 g jig.
Slow jigging close to the bottom was the key.
