Awesome thread here Lee! Thanks for sharing.

So not to get confused by any means but you are saying i can do the same thing with spinning reels and jigs fishing for grouper as i can with a saltist loaded with braid?

I do know the main thing is getting the fish off the bottom and then your good to go. Is it not a problem the fish pulling mad drag out?

    Thanks

    Brandon

[QUOTE=gottaflylee;177090] My personal best Gag was 53.5 pounds in 70' of water. Another friend did one in 60' that was 48 on one of my numbers.

    Brandon,
when drifting you can catch a good grouper on light tackle, especially if he (or she!) follows the jig away from the structure before striking. Same with slow trolling deep baits. Live baiters get some studs on the downriger baits with king mack tackle! Again, away from the hole!
If anchored tight on the mark, you'll need heavy drag and lots of pressure to keep the gags especially from rocking you. 20 lb spinning is not ultra light (can probably handle 10 lbs of drag or more!) and yes, giant bottom fish are taken regularly on such tackle, mostly on the drift.
    Let's go practice!

Hey Lee, would these work? Found these in a draw in my kitchen, near the spoons, now all I have to figure out is how to explain the vanishing knives to my wife? We will be eating out alot for awhile. .........ICM

Note to ICM; get a water softener.

    Another jig to try

    Hi Guys:
SPECIALIZED BAITS makes a jig called 'Li'L BUNKER" in Pink or Pink/WHITE.
I've used them and they are killers. I fish them fo just about ANYTHING. From jigging YFT to deep jigging for Grouper. They really work. I wish I could have 'em on my site.

    Question

What methods of jigging, used while jigging DEEP (600'+)??

I know to get the jig to the bottom and try to keep it in the zone, but how about everyone's preferences on jigging methods??

I have recently purchased multiple jigs in varying sizes, colors and weights, I plan on trying them in some of the deep waters in the Norfolk Canyon as well as some other structures off the Virginia and NC coasts. I am looking for BIG GROUPERS, mostly snowy as well as wreck fish.

I am in the process of a making a few modifications to my deep drop techniques as well as additional modifications to the jigs themselves.

    Any help would be appreciated.
